Jose Coronado

Born in the capital of Spain on August 14, 1957, into a high-class family, José Coronado García never had any acting vocation, far from it. He started studying Law, but dropped out after four years, because he decided to change his career and try his hand at Medicine. It wasn’t his thing either, so he ended up giving up, this time after only two courses. From his university days he remembers: “I became a great musé and poker player.”

But even though he doesn’t study, he takes advantage of his college days to take his first steps as a model and discovers that the agencies are very interested in him. He ends up shooting a whiskey commercial in Mallorca for which he charges a huge amount of money, which is why he comes to the conclusion that he has a future in the sector. He ends up setting up a modeling agency that was very successful, and invests the profits in a travel agency and a restaurant, which establishes him as a successful young entrepreneur.

Stressed by his dedication to companies, a friend advises him to start some creative activity to let off steam. He decides to study acting, so he enrolls in Cristina Rota’s school, even though he is already 30 years old. He made his debut with some success in the play “El público”, and in the cinema he participated in Waka-Waka , by Kim Densalat. “From the beginning I saw that, in order to be complete and live well, an actor has to ‘give his all’ to the movies, TV and the theater. So, when one thing faltered, I went to the other and continued learning. I never I have disgusted nothing: a heifer has given me the same as a miura”, explained the actor.

He was a young bourgeois with revolutionary pretensions in Jarrapellejos , by Antonio Giménez-Rico. Numerous roles followed, such as the leading man in Yo soy ésa , along with the very popular Isabel Pantoja , unfaithful husband in the comedy Salsa rosa , masked vigilante in La vuelta del Coyote , clumsy and drunken lover in La mirada del otro , widower in Frontera sur , and manager of the excavator in Anita does not miss the train . On television he became popular as the sophisticated agent Lucas, from Central Brigade , as the divorced Chus in Hermanos de lecheand as the local editor-in-chief Luis Sanz in Periodistas , among other jobs. He does not come out of tune, but all his performances are excessively flat, and easy, without particularly memorable moments.

He tried a little harder as the most illustrious Aragonese painter, in his youth, in Carlos Saura ‘s Goya in Bordeaux , a role for which he earned his first Goya nomination (the veteran version of the character was played by the great Francisco Rabal ) . . But the real turning point in his career occurs after his meeting with the director Enrique Urbizu , who bets heavily on him by giving him a role as a retired corrupt policeman in La caja 507. Against all odds, the actor very convincingly built the owner of the aforementioned box, a selfish guy who is looking for the robbers who supposedly have kept the contents, some compromising papers, although in reality they are held by an honest citizen ( Antonio Resines ) . . He obtained a new nomination for the Spanish Academy Awards.

Almost immediately after, José Coronado embroiders his character in La vida mancha , also under the orders of Urbizu. This time he plays a laconic guy who, after disappearing for a few years, goes to visit the family of his brother, a problem gambler. The former short-sighted heartthrob is capable of expressing a lot, with few words, using silences very well… It is clear that a great actor has been born.

His work in La vida de nadie , by Eduard Cortés , also has a lot of merit , in which he was an apparent winner who is actually a compulsive liar. He closed many mouths that still doubted his acting ability.

Miguel Courtais has given him roles in his reconstructions of controversial episodes in the recent history of Spain. Thus, in El lobo he was another unscrupulous policeman, and in GAL he appears at the beginning of the film in a character that supposedly represents Lieutenant General Andrés Cassinello, director of the Secret Services during the years of the dirty war against ETA, who Asked if he was the head of the GAL, he replied: “See if it were true and you had discovered it. Your life would only be worth two pesetas.” He also revolved around ETA We are all invited , by Manuel Gutiérrez Aragón , where he played a professor at the University of the Basque Country, in the crosshairs of the sinister organization.

He definitely won the Goya with his intense interpretation of the obfuscated and alcoholic police inspector Santos Trinidad, in search of some guys involved in a matter of drug trafficking, in No habrá paz para los malvados , where he surprised with his scruffy look, homeless man’s hair and sloppy mustache. There is talk of a possible American remake in which his character could be played by Sylvester Stallone .

On the tape, he was once again under the orders of Enrique Urbizu . “Working with Enrique is that I win the lottery. Some of the best gifts that the profession has given me have been given to me by him. I don’t know how to thank him,” the actor declared. “He is very clear about what he wants to tell, but then he is kind enough to listen to what you have to contribute. He does not impose, he lets you do it. And we understand cinema in a similar way.”

After the good results of this Spanish-style ‘film noir’, José Coronado seems focused on genre cinema. He appeared again as a policeman in the thriller El cuerpo (“it’s a union that I’m passionate about, they seem like very important people in this chaotic society we live in”), he was the father of a terrifying boy in Son of Cain , and chief of staff who helps to the character of Quim Gutiérrez, in the apocalyptic Los últimos días .

The actor was the boyfriend of the model Esther Cañadas, and had a son with the model Paola Dominguín, Nicolás Coronado , who has followed in his footsteps in the world of acting, by participating in series such as Tierra de lobos . Both appear together in a solidarity advertisement for Ayuda en acción. He was also the father of a daughter, Candela, with the singer Mónica Molina, sister of Ángela Molina. Subsequently, José Coronado has joined the journalist Elena González de Prado.
