José Altuve is a Venezuelan professional baseball player born on May 6, 1990. He plays as a second baseman for the Houston Astros on Major League Baseball (MLB).

 

Also in 2017, Altuve was co-Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the Year with JJ Watt of the NFL’s Houston Texans for helping lead relief efforts in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey.

He twice led the AL in stolen bases. From Maracay, Venezuela, Altuve played for the Venezuelan national team in the 2017 World Baseball Classic (WBC). On October 19, 2019, he hit his 13th career playoff homer, which is the most among second basemen.

Altuve is a Venezuelan baseball player who was born and raised in Maracay, Venezuela. Growing up, he was interested in baseball and even met Kansas City Royals catcher Salvador Pérez when he was seven years old. The due ended up training together and nurturing their talent. Currently, he plays for the Houston Astros based in Houston, TX.

 

JOSÉ ALTUVE PROFESSIONAL CAREER

MINOR LEAGUES

Growing up, Jose had a great interest in baseball such that in 2oo6 he attended Houston Astros tryout camp in Maracay at just 16 years old. However, the team scouts refused to allow him to participate as apparently he was too small and had probably lied about his age. The next day, with his father’s encouragement, Altuve returned to camp and produced his birth certificate.

After showing his playing skills to Astros special assistant Al Pedrique, Pedrique defended him at the front office, convincing them that Altuve had the talent and strength to eventually play in the major league.

Immediately impressing team officials, the Houston Astros signed Jos as an undrafted free agent with a $15,000 bonus on March 6, 2007. After hitting .343 in the 2007 season, Altuve joins Greeneville Astros in the rookie-level Appalachian League where he hit another .284 in 40 games.

He returned to Greeneville in 2009 and hit .324 with 21 stolen bases in just 45 games. Jos’ exemplary performance earned him a league all-star spot and team most valuable player (MVP) honors. Additionally, his .324 hit promoted him to the Tri-City ValleyCats of the Class A-Short Season New York-Penn League.

Additionally, he played for Lexington Legends of the Class A South Atlantic League in 2010 before joining Lancaster JetHawks in the California League. He hit .308 with 39 interceptions and 11 home runs and hit .276 on both teams respectively.

Jose’s performance at Lancaster in 2011 earned him promotion to Corpus Christi Hooks from the Texas League Class AA. At Corpus Christi Hooks, Altuve hit .361.

 

JOSE ALTUVE MLB 2018

Sports Illustrated ranked Altuve as baseball’s No. 2 player at the end of the 2017 season. On March 16, 2018, Altuve signed a five-year contract with the Houston Astros. Jos is set to receive $151 million for his contract extension which would last until 2024. Additionally, it includes a salary of $6 million in 2018 and a team option of $6.5 million in 2019.

On April 9, 2019, Altuve became the 16 Astros player to hit 100 career homers. Jose made his run against New York Yankees pitcher Jonathan Loáisiga . Additionally, Altuve notched up his second career Grand Slam in a 10-6 win over the Seattle Mariners on April 12.

On July 2, 2019, Altuve doubled in the lead in the seventh for his third of four hits in a 9–8 win over the Colorado Rockies. His 142nd career three-hit game, Altuve passed Jeff Bagwell for the second-most in Astros history, behind Craig Biggio (225).

It was also Altuve’s second straight game with at least three hits, a 6-1 win over the Seattle Mariners on June 30. grand slam in one season.

In July 2019, Jose suffered a knee injury in his right leg which hurt his performance in the league. Immediately the Astros were pulled from the American League Championship Series (ALCS), Altuve underwent knee surgery to repair a patella avulsion fracture on October 19. It was the first time he was on the list of disabled players.
