Johnny Gill ( Johnny Gill Jr.) is an American R&B musician, songwriter, and singer best known for his successful solo artist and as the lead singer of boy band New Edition.

He was born to Johnny Gill Sr., a Baptist pastor, and Annie Mae Gill, [mother] who had four boys. He started his singing at the age of five singing in church in a family gospel group called Little Johnny and ‘Wings of Faith’ which included his brothers Bobby, Jeff and Randy Gill (himself a solo artist and a member of II D. his mother is a journalist in Washington, D.C.

Gill is yet to marry although he has had a relationship with Canadian-born actress Jillian Barberie and he is also believed to have been involved with R&B singer Stacy Lattisaw. He has also been dating international model and actress Carissa Rosario lately.
Gill has been dogged by rumors about his true sexuality and it is alleged in many quarters that the music star is in fact attracted to men and has dated a number of male celebrities. He was enrolled at Kimball Elementary in Seattle, Washington. In high school, he then joined Sousa Junior High and Duke Ellington School of the Arts. He then pursued a college degree, but music won out.
JOHNNY GILL’S CAREER
Gill started his career recording his first demo at the age of 16. The demo landed him a contract with Cotillion Records, a subsidiary of Atlantic Records, which marked the official start of his music career. He later released his debut album Johnny Gill in April 1983 and it was quite successful. Him working with his longtime friend Stacy Lattisaw on the album Perfect Combination (1984) which he would later release as his second solo album in 1985.
Johnny was recruited in 1987 to join the R&B group “New Edition”. The band that previously consisted of Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, Bobby Brown, Ronnie DeVoe and Ralph Tresvant. Brown was subsequently kicked out of the group a few years before Gill’s appointment. He later became one of the lead singers of New Edition and he was a major contributor to the success of the band’s next album Heart Break (1988).
He later resumed his solo career when New Edition went on hiatus in 1990 and he released highly successful third solo albums before the band reunited in 1996. He then formed the 3-man band LSG in 1997 at the alongside Gerald Levert and Keith Sweat and together they released 2 hit albums; Levert.Sweat.Gill. from 1997 and LSG2 from 2003. He then reunited with the 4 band members New Edition in 2004 and they released a full album One Love
He also progressed in his solo career with the release of his 6th and 7th solo albums Still Winning from 2011 and Game Changer from 2014. He continued to tour as a member of New Edition although the band only released no new body of music since 2004. New Edition received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on January 23, 2017.
