JOHN ROBERTS (ACTOR) QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

Question: So you were born in Brooklyn. . .

Answer: Born in Brooklyn, raised in Edison, New Jersey, returned to Manhattan when I was 17 at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts where I earned an associate degree.

Quiz: It’s been two years, right?

Answer: Yeah, two years is all I could take [laughs] . Then I got into music a bit, then I went back to the comedy world. I was pretty funny when I was 15 or 16…I saw Pee-Wee Herman at Carnegie Hall, and it changed my life. Old Letterman, stuff like that.

Quiz: Would you say your debut was more theatrical than comedic?

Answer: I really liked comedy, that’s for sure, and I would write my own stuff. When I was 16, I would come and do places like Stand Up NY and bring my family and friends to support me because I was really young. All the other comics were like baby boomers. Then I stopped doing that when I started playing; they had a weird rule, they wouldn’t let you play in the clubs. And I was really dumb and I listened to them, I don’t know why I did that, because it was a stupid rule and I was already doing so well on my own.

I think after drama school I didn’t like actors or theater at all, although I’m friends with a lot of people I went to school with, I love them and I came back. At that point I started with music and got into drum machines and digital samplers and keyboards and everything and moved to the East Village, worked at Angelica Kitchen and I stayed a lot to myself. I think the longer I didn’t play, the bigger it got in my head when I did it again, which took me another ten years after I graduated. I just became more of a creative hermit.

Quiz: Have you ever played in bands?

Answer: I did in 2002, I started a band called Opti-Grab, we were out of the East Village. We had fun downtown; we opened for Gogol Bordello and Scissor Sisters, we did a little tour with Blondie, which was so exciting. And you know, we would play the Bowery Ballroom or the Mercury Lounge and sell it. We have a very big fan following this kind of scene which looked like Revenge of the Nerds when they play that last gig, it looked like this. Our music was a bit ironic, we didn’t really take ourselves too seriously. You can still find our music on iTunes and stuff like that.

Quiz: So when you were a kid in New York, were you openly gay then?

Answer: No. In college, I was dating the hottest girl in school, so I knew there was something wrong [laughs]. I think right out of college I wrote this letter to my mom that went “My son is gay?” thing.

Quiz: She’s obviously one of your biggest supporters.

Answer: Oh yes, of course.

Quiz: Because she seems to be everywhere, I know she was at NY Comic-Con and the Good Morning New York video. . .

Answer: Well, you know, my mom is very cool and she’s always been a big fan of comedy. All moms love this stuff. The only person you can brag to is your mother. Or just the person who will benefit the most. I love whenever she can be there. She just turned 70, so we had a great time in Vegas, saw Elton John, she loved it.

Quiz: So you do these viral videos that take off, the voice is very close to Linda Belcher, is that where the casting comes from?

Answer: Yeah. Like everyone in the cast, Kristen [Schaal] and Eugene [Mirman], there are definitely hints of things that we bring to the table, and my mother’s character has always been popular and I think that helped as a starting point with Loren. I think we ended up [Bob’s Burgers] on the east coast because of that, and it was okay. Thank goodness he was in it, and I think it all matched. Jon Benjamin and I are having a great time with it.

Quiz: this is quite interesting because you are the only one who does not play himself. While Eugene, Kristin, Jon. . . even Tina, Dan Mintz, they all do their own voice as you do a character. So do you ever give them shit for having to do more work?

Answer: No. It never really feels like work, because I can do it in my sleep. And I think everybody works that hard, and Larry Murphy, who does Teddy, he does a bunch of vocals and he’s really great at it. Our comedy is kind of similar in that we like to sketch and character, and I think everyone is stand-up based or their live work speaks like themselves, so that fits that as well.

Quiz: One of the things I noticed, obviously I could find a lot of videos of you doing your characters and your sketch work, but I had a really hard time finding videos of your stand-up. Is there a reason for this?

Answer: Well, I do my YouTube videos and I’ve filmed stuff at Joe’s Pub, but I really like to keep it live and have too much live there. Guess I’m a bit control crazy when it comes to online content and just make sure it’s something a bit above the live show, or not above , but if the live show was filmed the right way, I’d definitely be more for it. Sometimes if you’re not there in the room you just don’t get the same vibe, if you don’t shoot it the right way it just isn’t worth it to me. I work a lot of my stuff so that I end up filming life or perfecting it, so when I film it the way I want to film it,

Quiz: That’s why I asked, it looks like you’re very on top of what you can see. Now, I also noticed that you play a lot of female characters, but rarely have fake breasts. Is there a reason for this?

Answer: Hey, I don’t know, this is getting a little too ridiculous. I just like to get gas; wigs are so simple, you just need to change your mannerisms and accent and don’t put on too much like that. I just like that it’s simple and I really treat my wigs like crap, I just put them in the bag when I travel. I kind of have this weird love/hate relationship with my wigs.

Quiz: I know you have a running joke about you hanging out at every Comic-Con, and my first question on that is, is anyone surprised or surprised yet?

Answer: Unfortunately, no [laughs]. They are like “ok homo”. No, it’s kind of a joke, because it’s something people go out a lot and I’ve never really had that moment. I guess I smeared myself with ‘My son is gay?’. I always wanted to have this press release…not really. But no, I don’t think anyone is surprised, which is good. This is a good thing.

Quiz: And the second part of these questions is that you don’t hear too much about gay comics. You hear more about lesbians, but is there a big gay community in the comedy world?

Answer: Well, you know, I had the pleasure of touring with Margaret Cho for two years on the road, like two national tours and then we went to Australia and London; it truly has the gayest crowd for gay comedy. She’s truly an icon of gay comedy, probably before Kathy Griffin did. The audience is very gay. But I don’t like to do comedy night gays or anything like that. I just prefer to play in bars where everyone can go out and be together.

Quiz: I just meant to say better.

Answer: I might be like “gay people are like…” haha. No, but there are nights, like at the Act bar in LA, there’s a night where a lot of cool gay comics mix and they’re all great and awesome.

Quiz: Ok, I’ll end with two questions, are you a guy from Brooklyn or a guy from Jersey. . . I assume you prefer Brooklyn, but I don’t want to guess.

Answer: Well, I would say in New York, I’ve lived there longer than anywhere else. I am from New York .

Quiz: So New York, now you’re in LA, do you have a preference?

Answer: Well, right now it’s LA [laughs]. I think LA has changed a lot over the past 12 years, but I will always be a New Yorker. I think I will definitely live in the upper west with very long nose hair and an x-ray.

Quiz: Are you going to cycle with it in your basket?

Answer: It is true.

Quiz: And finally, since your mother is the influence of mom videos, which led to the voice of Linda Belcher, will your mother make an appearance on Bob Burger at any time?

Answer: Oh, she would love that. You never know . I don’t know, we tried to get her and Loren to meet her, but she would do it in a heartbeat. My sister also has a beautiful voice. We call it the roaring mouth.
