John Paul Jones is an English musician and record producer. His birth name is John Richard Baldwin. His stage name was suggested by, Andrew Loog Oldham, his friend. Andrew had seen the John Paul Jones movie poster in France.

John was born on January 3, 1946 in Sidcup, Kent. He was the bassist and keyboardist of the rock band Led Zeppelin. He and Jimmy Page formed the band in 1968. Prior to forming the band, he was a session musician and arranger.

The Led Zeppelin band broke up after the death of drummer John Bonham. This prompted Paul to develop a solo career. He with Josh Homme and Dave Grohl . Formed a rock supergroup called Them Crooked Vultures in 2009. He started playing the piano at age six. His father, Joe Baldwin, was a big band pianist and arranger in the 1940s and 50s. His mother also worked in the music business.

MUSICAL CAREER OF JOHN PAUL JONES

Paul became a choir director and organist in his local church when he was 14 years old. He also bought his first guitar at the same age. John joined the Delta Group when he was 15 years old. It was his first band. John then played bass for Jett Blacks, a London jazz-rock band. In 1962 John was hired by Jet Harris and Tony Meehan of the hit British band The Shadows for a two-year stint. This brought a breakthrough in his musical career. John played over a hundred studio recording sessions with Decca Records between 1964 and 1968.

John then expanded his work in the studio by playing keyboards, organizing and taking over general management of the studio. Some of the artists and bands he has worked with are The Rolling Stones, Herman’s Hermits, Donovan, Jeff Beck, Francoise Hardy, Cat Stevens, Rod Stewart, Shirley Bassey, Lulu, Dusty Springfield. He also arranged Mickie Most after seeing the good work he had done with Herman’s Hermits.
