John McMartin was a legend on the New York stage. In movies he is known by titles like “All the President’s Men.” The actor passed away on July 6, 2016 at the age of 86 as a result of cancer, in Manhattan.

Born in Warsaw (Indiana), on August 21, 1929, John Francis McMartin began his career in the Broadway theater with “The Conquering Hero”, from 1961, although he gained notoriety above all as the accountant of “Sweet Charity”. He premiered “Follies” with the renowned composer Stephen Sondheim, and would later repeat it with him, in “A Little Night Music”.

In cinema,  John McMartin  participated in  All the president’s men , as head of the newspaper’s international section, in  Brubaker , as a senator, political adviser in  Impact  and millionaire in  Dangerously together . He was also a regular face on television on shows like  The Golden Girls  and  Cheers .

He is survived by his two daughters, and his partner of many years, actress  Charlotte Moore , artistic director of the Irish Repertory Theatre.
