John Mahoney
He gave life to Martin Crane, the irascible father of Kelsey Grammer, for 11 years in “Frasier”, one of the most popular sitcoms, but he also participated as a secondary in more than 30 films. John Mahoney passed away on February 4, 2018, at the age of 77, from kidney failure, in a Chicago nursing home.
Born in Blackpool, Lancashire, British Jonathan Mahoney was the seventh of eight children of a marriage formed by a baker and a housewife who was passionate about reading. He decided to emigrate to the United States together with Vera, his older sister, and fought in World War II to speed up the process to achieve citizenship.
For more than a decade he worked as an editor for a medical journal. But she wasn’t happy, so when she was 40 she took acting classes at St. Nicholas Theatre, making her stage debut in 1977 to rave reviews and the prestigious Tony Award in 1986 for her work in “The House of Blue Leaves”.
He made his film debut with the forgotten Hudson Taylor , which was followed by small roles, such as a judge in Suspicious , a professor in Moonstruck , and an ambassador in Frenético , although he drew attention above all as an acclaimed writer turned screenwriter, to whom he turns for help the central character of Barton Fink .
Fame came to him from 1993 when he played the angry and acid Martin Crane, father of the psychiatrist who is the protagonist of Frasier , a role for which he received two Golden Globe nominations. The series was on the air for eleven seasons. When he finished, he played relevant characters in the series In Therapy and Queens Poker .
Distrustful when talking about his private life, a newspaper report revealed that he had had relationships with various women, but had never decided to get married.
