INTERVIEW WITH JOHN LYNCH
Q: Tell us a bit about your character, Frank Blake?
John Lynch: Frank is a very warm guy. I think his marriage had problems, but with his wife, they seem to have sorted them out.
Q: What storyline are you involved in – Blue Lightning?
John Lynch: Frank is in charge of the Fair Isle Research Institute and oversees all bird research on the island. He’s married to a very brilliant research scientist, who gets killed, and from there it all gets very complicated. I really enjoyed working with Dougie Henshall, we’ve known each other for a long time but it was great to have the chance to work together.
Q: What inspired you to work on Shetland?
John Lynch: The drama was a draw, but the opportunity to visit Shetland was a real draw for me. I loved it there – even managed a little boat trip and visited the northern gannet colony. I really had a great time there – really enjoyed it. It was my first time there before and I didn’t know what to expect. Shetland is a place full of different influences from Scotland to Norway, which makes it unique.
Q: What do you think makes Shetland such a unique place?
John Lynch: It’s so northern and yet so familiar, but suddenly you see a piece of coastline you’ve never seen before anywhere else. And on top of that there is the history of whaling, shipping and now the oil industry which has resulted in the creation of huge communities anchored in oil. The sea, the wildlife, the scenery, the people – these are the things I took away from my Shetland experience.
Q: Are you a fan of detective fiction?
John Lynch: I love crime documentaries – I have to admit, I love following real-life crimes. But in terms of crime drama? Columbo is the king. He has huge quirks, wonderful charisma, I’m a huge Columbo fan. I don’t watch anything I’m involved in, I don’t find it useful or interesting. I like working on it but watching it? No, it’s up to viewers whether they like it or not.
Q: How did it work with Douglas Henshall and Bill Paterson?
John Lynch: Dougie is an extremely precise actor, very very present. We got on very well – I really enjoyed it. I met Bill through a friend of ours years ago. He has a great quirky sense of humor, which is important on set. He’s good at keeping everyone’s spirits up and up – which is important when you’re filming long days.
Q: Any memorable filming experiences?
John Lynch: The day we shot in a white church in Shetland [Fair Isle Kirk] stands out to me. It was a pretty amazing place and amazing atmosphere and it stands out from any filming days we’ve had in Shetland. Also, working in Glasgow for the first time. But above all what was memorable for me was the welcome – I was so warmly welcomed in Scotland it was fabulous.
Q: What can viewers expect from your Shetland episodes?
John Lynch: The filming style is wonderful and the story is a very complex look at how people can betray themselves, quietly without much fanfare, and how all sorts of things can turn out.
