John hawkes
His name wasn’t widely known until an Oscar nomination landed him, but John Hawkes has been quite busy in recent decades, playing characters in spades.
Born on September 11, 1959, in Alexandria (Minnesota), John Marvin Perkins –real name of the performer– began as a musician, as he was one of the members of the band Meat Joy. He co-founded Big State Productions Theatre, a theater company, with which he performed in cities including Washington.
He debuted on the big screen with the B-series film Assassins from the Future , and since then he hasn’t stopped playing secondary characters, in titles like From Dusk Till Dawn , where he was a liquor salesman. He has taken a tour of the most renowned series, such as Doctor in Alaska , The X-Files , ER , 24 , CSI: Las Vegas and Deadwood , where he stood out as Sol Star, a businessman in a lawless city.
He starred in the independent film Tú, yo y todos los demés , a dramatic comedy in which he was a shoe store clerk, and which received the Special Jury Prize at Sundance. He also appeared in titles like Identity , with John Cusack and Ray Liotta , but also in Miami Vice , The Perfect Storm , or American Gangster .
He joined the great television phenomenon Lost , in its sixth and final season, when he played Lennon, one of the Others, a translator taking refuge in the temple with the glasses of the legendary member of The Beatles.
Recognition came too late for Hawkes, when he was nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for the indie drama Winter’s Bone . Her character is the uncle of the protagonist, a young woman forced to find her father so as not to lose the house where she lives with her little brothers and her sick mother.
In all probability, this candidacy will open a new stage in Hawkes’ career, until now in minor roles almost always. Steven Soderbergh has signed him up to appear in Contagion , a disaster film.
