My great friend John Gavin died this morning. One of the greatest men I have ever known and who was like a brother to me. May he rest in peace,” said director William Friedkin.

Born on April 8, 1931 in Los Angeles, John Anthony Golenor belonged to a wealthy family. With a Mexican mother, he was fluent in Spanish. After graduating from Stanford University with a law degree, he served in the Army for three years during the Korean War. Although he hoped to become a diplomat, Universal offered him an acting contract which he decided to accept, to try his luck, for at least a year.

The studio bet so heavily on him that it gave him the leading role in  Douglas Sirk ‘s A Time to Love, a Time to Die, one  of  the most expensive films the house produced in 1958, where he was a German soldier looking for his missing parents. during World War II. For his work, he received the Golden Globe for the debutant with the greatest projection. He reprized Sirk’s command as a photographer in love with a widowed actress ( Lana Turner ) in  Imitation of Life .

Two works stand out above all, his composition of the boyfriend of Marion Crane ( Janet Leigh ) in  Psycho , and Julio Cesar, in  Spartacus . After titles like  The street behind  or  Millie, a modern girl , she participated in various Broadway musicals. From 1971 to 1973 he served as president of the Screen Actors Guild.

Divorced in 1965 from Cicely Evans, also an actress, with whom he had two daughters, he joined Constance Towers. In 1981 he walked out of rehearsals for another play when President Ronald Reagan named him US ambassador to Mexico. During his management, both countries went through moments of enormous tension.
