He made an acting career mainly on television, where he had been acting since the 1950s. John Forsythe died on April 1, 2010, after reaching the respectable age of 92, due to pneumonia, in Santa Ynez, a Californian town . He had been fighting colon cancer for several years. “He died as he had lived his life, with dignity and excellence,” said Brooke Forsythe, his daughter.

Born on January 29, 1918, in Penns Grove (New Jersey), John Lincoln Freund – his real name – moved to New York at the age of five, because his father worked on Wall Street. After leaving his studies at the university, he took advantage of the fact that he had a good voice to work first as an announcer for a baseball team, and later on the radio. From there he became a theater actor.

After adopting the stage name of John Forsythe, he made his film debut in the submarine film Destination Tokyo , opposite Cary Grant , in which he was Sparks, one of the sailors. He also served in the army during World War II helping the war wounded to regain his diction. At the end of the war, he played important roles in numerous television series and movies such as Fort Bravo , where he was a cavalry captain.

On television he became a celebrity starring in the series Bachelor Father , where he was a lawyer without many principles who was forced to settle down when he had to take care of his niece.

After divorcing Parker McCormick, with whom he had a son, he remained together with actress Julie Warren, who gave him two more daughters. Upon her death, in 1994, he remarried, to Nicole Carter.

In addition to succeeding on Broadway with titles like “Teahouse of the August Moon,” Forsythe had leading roles in films like Justice for All , with Al Pacino . However, he will be remembered above all for voicing Charlie, the chief of the protagonists of Charlie’s Angels. . His character never showed his face. He reprized the role in the motion pictures.

He starred in the hit series Dynasty , where he was Blake Carrington, an oil magnate who married his secretary. Although in the first season, Forsythe was the bad guy, in the second season his character’s ex-wife, Alexis ( Joan Collins ), appeared, who made his life miserable and became one of the great television villains of the 80s. In 1991 Forsythe starred in the telefilm Dynasty: The Reunion , which brought back the characters from the series. His last television appearance was in 2006, in a special program where he reunited with his co-stars.
