The businessman was born on April 10, 1952 in the United States of America. He did not reveal any information about his parents or siblings but grew up with his family in Charlotte, North Carolina, United States. Regarding his education, he completed his basic education at the local Merry Oaks school. While in third grade, he began reading a series of articles in the weekly Reader, which introduced him to children from different countries. From then on, he began to develop an interest in adventures and was obsessed with discovering South America and lost cities.In 1976, he earned a degree in environmental protection from the University of North Carolina. After graduating, he immediately applied for the American Peace Corps and sent him to the Ivory Coast for agricultural advice on a cotton plantation. Thereafter, he began his journey to find lost cities from Ecuador to Peru, and continued his journey.

After failing to locate one of the Lost Cities, the ecologist had worked and gained business knowledge during his various travels. In 1978 he founded Andes Fur Trading Co. Inc which operated under Raiders of the Lost Art and traded tribal goods. In 1990 he reached one of the small villages of the local Shipibo tribe where he found himself collapsing from the heat and exhaustion.

Luckily, he was picked up by the friendliest villagers and treated to a mixture of tea with him that cured him in no time. After returning home, he found the benefits of herbal tea relieving him of the chronic physical and mental fatigue that had accompanied him for years. After contacting Dr. Nicole Maxwell who had been researching herbs for forty years, he founded the Amazon Herb Company in 1990

Together with his wife Olivia, he won the SAFE Water Award on October 12, 2011 for their work in keeping Amazon clean. Following this, they again received their first ACEER Legacy Award for the conservation of the Amazon rainforest and for supporting environmental protection on October 12, 2012.

John has been married to American singer/songwriter, entrepreneur and philanthropist Olivia Newton-John since June 21, 2008. Before they started dating in 2006, the couple had known each other for almost 10 years. John invited Olivia to join a jungle canoe trip due to Parick McDermott’s disappearance at the time. They participated in an Indian ceremony in Peru and live together in Jupiter, Florida after their marriage.

After nine days of their marriage in Peru, they once again exchanged their vows on a beach in Florida. However, Olivia had previously dated and married actor Matt Lattanzi in December 1984.
