john curran
American transferred to the land of kangaroos, John Curran has a brief but intense trajectory, where his taste for the adaptation of novels, and the look at the real world, attracts attention.
Born in Utica, New York, he studied design and illustration at Syracuse University. His initial career steps were in the world of graphic design in Manhattan, but in 1986 he moved to Australia, where he made a living shooting commercials.
His first film work was the 1997 short Down Rusty Down , which opened doors for him to make his feature film debut with Praise , about the tumbles of a misplaced couple, which received much praise and awards in Australia. It was based on a novel by Andrew McGahan, and his later works We Are No Longer Two (2004) – Andre Dubus – and The Painted Veil (2006) – W. Somerset Maugham – would also have a literary source , the second with Edward Norton . Interestingly, his only experience as a screenwriter has been for someone else’s director, Michael Winterbottom . It’s about the devil under the skin, pure film noir that adapts a Jim Thompson novel .
He repeated with Norton in Stone (2010), about a prisoner on probation, where the agent who followed him was Robert De Niro. After narrating the true story of the adventurer Roby Davidson in The Journey of Your Life (2013), she has once again dived into real events with Chappaquiddick (2017), about the tragedy that cut short the presidential chances of Ted Kennedy.
