He was a tireless character actor who has more than 70 films in his filmography. Joe Mantell died Wednesday, September 29, at Providence Tarzana Medical Center, in Tarzana, California, of a long unspecified illness. He was 94 years old.

Born on December 21, 1915, Joseph Mantell studied at the Actors Lab in Hollywood, a prestigious acting school. He made his debut playing a newsboy in Joseph H. Lewis ‘ Crime Tale , a thriller with Glenn Ford . Since then he began to lavish himself on various television series, and came to play the protagonist of Guilty Witness , protagonist of one of the best episodes of the series Alfred Hitchcock Presents .

Mantell is especially remembered for playing Angie, the inseparable friend of the protagonist of Marty , first in the television version, and later in the unforgettable film starring Ernest Borgnine . In Los pájaros he played the salesman in the bar who was talking to the ornithologist who was speculating about what was happening. In 1974’s Chinatown , Joe Mantell played Walsh, the partner of Jake, a character played by Jack Nicholson . He reprized the character in 1990’s The Two Jakes , which was his last film work. The actor is survived by his wife, Mary, three children and two grandchildren.

“Since we shot the film we had not seen each other again. I don’t know why, because we lived nearby. But he surprised me with his new works. He was a great actor who made my performance better. God bless you, ”said Ernest Borgnine, 93, upon learning of his death.
