  • She gave up training completely for a decade from the ages of 27 to 37, however, she remained slim over the years as she had a large family and a farm to support, while also running several business ventures on the side.
  • In 2016, she started doing 20-minute workouts that typically consist of squats, upper body and arm exercises, sprints, and rows.
  • She began taking long walks whenever she could, especially after having her fifth child.
  • Her new approach of including only short workouts has made it easier for her to recover from exercise and enjoy physical activity without any pressure.
  • Her grocery shopping for the week precedes the planning and preparation of meals for all the days she will cook in the coming week. Most of the fresh produce and herbs are grown on their farm.
  • She enjoys sautéing veggies in olive oil and sea salt so her kids can enjoy their veggies while also having nutritious meals.
  • Joanna rarely consumes store-bought processed foods. Even the snacks and smoothies at her house are made from scratch and are usually high in protein and fiber.

  1. Her earliest childhood ambition was to get cast in TV commercials. From the age of 6 to 8, she would often read from the back of a cereal box or a shampoo bottle and pretend to be a model promoting the product.
  2. Joanna’s first job was to get a course of food at an all-you-can-eat buffet restaurant.
  3. When she entered high school, she was considered the most practical of all siblings and often helped her father at his job. She was seriously planning to take over the Feuerstein franchise until she developed an interest in broadcast journalism.
  4. Joanna has no formal training in interior design and has learned all about it through practice and research.
  5. She expressed her lifelong desire to work with her father by persuading him to take over the Magnolia Market retail store after he sold his Flintstones franchise.

After her retail store closed in 2005, Joanna continued to assist Chip with renovation projects. Alongside this, she began writing about design on her blog and became a contributing writer for Wacoan Magazine This led to an invitation to write Kid-Friendly Home Design for DesignMom.com in 2011. Her contribution also caught the attention of High Noon Productions, who contacted Chip and Jo for a pilot episode featuring their construction business. It soon grew into a very successful Fixer Top series.
  7. Chip and Jo’s first construction project after marriage was to renovate their own home immediately after their honeymoon.
