Joan Lorring was nominated for an Oscar in 1945 for Best Supporting Actress, for playing Bessie Watty in “The Wheat Is Green.” The actress died on Friday, May 30, 2014 at the age of 88 in the New York suburb of Sleepy Hollow, according to one of her daughters.

Born in Hong Kong in 1926, the family of Mary Magdalena Ellis (real name of the interpreter) had to leave the then British protectorate in 1939, after the outbreak of World War II.

When the young woman settled with her family in California, she began a career as an actress, first on the radio, and later in the movies, changing her name to Joan Lorring because the studios thought that hers was not going to be popular.

She made her debut with a small role in the forgotten drama Song of Russia , although her first major work was Irving Rapper ‘s The Wheat Is Green , in which Bette Davis played a teacher trying to help a young student from humble origins. Lorring played a young woman who pressured the latter to drop out because she had just had his baby. The Academy Award nomination made Lorring a solid promise.

However, the actress did not finish curdling. After some tapes like Living the Past or The Big Sister , which were not successful, she was relegated to television roles from the early 50s. Lorring was married to Martin Sonenberg, an endocrinologist from New York, until he died on June 27, 2011. The marriage had two daughters.
