Jimmy Smith was born in Brooklyn, New York, United States, on July 9, 1955, as the eldest child and only child of Cornelis Leendert Smits and Emilia (née Pola). His father Cornelius Smith came from Paramaribo, Suriname, and was of Dutch descent.
