The son of Peter JS Sturgess and Jane O. (Martin), he was born on May 16, 1978 in London, UK, but grew up and lived in Surrey. He until he left for Manchester, where he studied at the School of Communications, Music and Acting at the University of Salford. He graduated in 1999. In 2010 Sturgess landed the lead role in the film Freedom Walk , by veteran director Peter Weir . Based on true events, it told the story of a group of prisoners who flee from the Siberian gulag where they are being held and start a dangerous and long journey to India. The film also stars Ed Harris , Colin Farrell or Saoirse Ronan , among others.
