Jim Irsay was born in Lincolnwood, Illinois to wealthy Chicago businessmen, Harriet and Robert Irsay. His father had Hungarian Jewish roots, while his mother hailed from Polish Catholic immigrants. Although raised Catholic, Jim learned about his father’s Jewish heritage at fourteen.
He had a sibling, Thomas, with functional needs, who passed in 1999. Sadly, in 1971, his sister Roberta lost her life in a car accident.
Jim attended Loyola Academy in Wilmette, Illinois, and Mercersburg Academy in Mercersburg, Pennsylvania, he pursued broadcast journalism at Southern Methodist University, graduating in 1982. Jim briefly played for the SMU Mustangs before an ankle injury ended his sports career.

At the age of 12, Jim Irsay’s father, Robert, made a trade with Carroll Rosenbloom to obtain the Baltimore Colts. Jim joined the Colts after graduating from high school in 1982. He was named vice president and general manager a month after moving to Indianapolis.
Jim took on extra responsibilities following his father’s stroke in 1995, in 1997, at the age of 37, he became the NFL’s youngest club owner.
The Colts flourished during Jim’s guidance, finishing fourth in victories according to Pro Football Reference. They won Super Bowl XLII, ten division crowns, and appeared in 18 playoff games.
Jim worked alongside Hall of Famers such as Manning, Harrison, Faulk, Polian, Dungy, and James. He spoke out against Limbaugh’s Rams candidacy in 2009, emphasizing the necessity of acceptable language in the NFL.
