Regarding his education, he attended Lyons Central High School. After graduating from school, he enrolled at Syracuse University in 1962. From there, he earned a bachelor’s degree in social science and joined the Delta Upsilon fraternity. While in college, he was the captain of the varsity team in his senior years. After graduating, he played professionally with the Scranton Miners of the Eastern Professional Basketball League.

He started his career as a basketball coach in 1969 and was hired as an assistant under Roy Danforth at Syracuse. Subsequently, he was promoted to full-time assistant coach and also helped guide the Orange to the 1975 NCAA Tournament.
