Jigawa Sets Up Election Tribunal Ahead of LG Elections

As the October 5 local government elections in Jigawa approach, the state’s Independent Electoral Commission has inaugurated a judicial panel to address electoral malpractices.

This announcement was made in a statement by the Commission’s Public Relations Officer, Habibu Yusuf on Monday.

Yusuf stated, “The Jigawa State Independent Electoral Commission has presided over the inauguration of a judicial panel on electoral malpractices regarding the forthcoming October 5, 2024, local government elections.”

The state Chief Judge, Umar Sadiq, administered the swearing-in of 13 judges, with Justice Musa Ubale serving as the chair.

According to the statement, the judicial panel is tasked with receiving complaints from individuals who feel cheated, robbed of their victory, or affected by any irregularities that may arise during the elections across the state.

This initiative aims to ensure a fair electoral process.

The inauguration event was attended by several dignitaries, including the state’s Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice, Bello Abdulkadir Fanini, the chairman of the commission, Alhaji Auwalu Harbo, and the entire commission.

An article online reports that following President Bola Tinubu’s commendation of the Supreme Court’s judgment on local government autonomy in July, state governments and electoral bodies have begun organizing elections.

For instance, Kano is set to hold its elections on October 26, while Bauchi and Kogi completed theirs in August.

Additionally, Kwara, Enugu, and Imo conducted elections on Saturday, with Abia scheduled for November 2.
