ADRIAN EDMONDSON: ‘JENNIFER AND I WOULD KISS FOR AGES BEFORE WE EVEN SAID HELLO’
The comedian and writer about stoicism, working in a pork pie factory, and the bad review he hasn’t forgotten.
Now in Bradford, Adrian Edmondson, 61, is best known for his television roles in The Young Ones and Bottom, the latter which he wrote with his comedy partner, the late Rik Mayall. Last month he released his second children’s book, Junkyard Jack And The Horse That Talked; he also co-wrote a play with Nigel Planer, Vulcan 7, which is filming from September. He is married to actress Jennifer Saunders, has three daughters and lives in London.
When were you happiest?
My granddaughter is only one, but she gives the best hugs. That’s where I’m happiest right now.
What is your biggest fear?
Having dementia and not having the means to surpass myself. My dad had it and I often thought, as he looked at me with startled, frightened eyes, that he was pleading with me to let him in.
What is your earliest memory?
Acquiring a four-year-old penknife and keeping it hidden in a storm drain on the military base where we lived in Cyprus. I still have a huge scar on my thumb where I sliced it trying to close the knife. I ran home, covered in blood.
What trait do you most regret about yourself?
There is in me a pompous, haughty, who knows everything, who tries to get out. He’s ugly, vicious, and mostly fake, anyway, so I don’t know why he thinks he’s so great.
What do you dislike the most about your appearance?
Almost all. When I see myself in the mirror, I’m shocked by the big bald jerk staring at me. He looks pretty shocked too.
What did you want to be growing up?
I always wanted to be an actor or a rock star. I was suspended from school in sixth grade and allowed to return only when I promised to join the army. But I lied.
What’s the worst thing anyone has said to you?
I had a lot of bad reviews, but only one that really hurt. Alan Coren called Bottom “mindless tosh”. The criticisms are pretty light, but Rik and I were such big fans of him that it hurt us terribly.
Is it better to give or to receive?
Receiving is harder, because it’s hard to get excited about some of the bullshit you receive.
What is your greatest pleasure?
I collect vinyl 45s and absolutely adore naff 70s singles like Seasons In The Sun by Terry Jacks.
What was the best kiss of your life?
When we were first going out, every time I went to Jennifer’s she would open the door and we would kiss for 10 minutes before we even said hello. It was amazing.
What’s the Worst Job You’ve Ever Done?
I worked in the biggest pork pie factory in Europe. I had a plastic mushroom shaped thing and had to tamp the meat into the pie base. It was a nine-to-five pie conveyor belt. Worst of all was the crackling AM radio, which blasted loudly thanks to the tin tannoy system. I still can’t listen to 10cc’s I’m Not In Love without thinking about raw ground pork.
What was your biggest disappointment?
Not making Top Of The Pops when The Young Ones’ single hit number one.
If you could change your past, what would you change?
I practice stoicism. Not the stiff upper lip, the modern stuff, but the ancient Greek philosophy. You have to accept what you cannot change. I try to face forward all the time. When that doesn’t work, I think of buying a machine gun.
What’s closest to you dead?
I hit some bumpy tarmac driving my motorbike over the Pyrenees in the early 1980s. There was no safety barrier and I found myself rolling along a precipice on the half the width of the tires over 100 meters.
What song would you like to play at your funeral?
Jazz, delicious hot, disgustingly cold by the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band. Every time Rik and I got stuck writing a script, we would put it together and the world immediately seemed to turn back to a more stupidly bright place.
