Biography
The oldest of the three daughters of retired real estate developer Dimitrios and psychotherapist Eileen Psaki, Jen Psaki was born in Stamford, Connecticut on December 1, 1978. She is of Polish, Greek, and Irish ancestry. Psaki graduated from Greenwich High School in 1996 while still an adolescent. She continued her education at the College of William & Mary in Virginia, where she graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in sociology and English in 2000. Psaki competed in backstroke swimming in college for the William & Mary swim team.
Career
Psaki started her political career in 2001 by contributing to the reelection campaigns of Tom Harkin, a senator from Iowa, and Tom Vilsack, a governor of that state. A few years later, she worked for John Kerry’s presidential campaign as the deputy press secretary. Psaki served as both the regional press secretary for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and Joseph Crowley’s communications director from 2005 to 2006.
Obama Administration
Psaki initially met Barack Obama when she worked as his traveling press secretary during his 2008 campaign for president. She was appointed White House deputy press secretary after he was elected president. Psaki received a promotion to deputy communications director in late 2009. In 2011, she resigned from that job to take a senior vice president and managing director role at the Washington, DC, branch of the PR company Global Strategy Group.
As press secretary for Obama’s reelection bid in 2012, Psaki made a comeback to the world of political communications. She was named the US Department of State’s spokesman the following year. Psaki returned to the White House in 2015 to take on the position of communications director, a position she held until the conclusion of Obama’s administration.
Biden Administration
Psaki joined Joe Biden’s transition team in late 2020 after he was elected president. She was then appointed press secretary for the White House. Psaki had her first news conference in that capacity on the evening of Biden’s inauguration in early 2021. As she continued in her role, she made other historic decisions, such as requiring an interpreter who could speak American Sign Language to attend each daily briefing. Psaki’s arrival followed four years of a changing cast of combative press secretaries who habitually disseminated false information on behalf of Donald Trump. She was universally commended for her demeanor and candor in front of the microphone.
Psaki said that she will depart her post after a year in an interview with political analyst David Axelrod little under four months after taking on the role of White House press secretary. In the end, she stuck to her promise because on May 13, 2022, she departed the White House. Karine Jean-Pierre, Psaki’s senior deputy, took her position.
