Born on September 9, 1956 in Charlotte, North Carolina as Jeffery Hammond, Jeff is a United States citizen and is of white ethnicity. Jeff attended North Mecklenburg High School in Charlotte and was named a high school football All-American cornerback from 1973-1974.

Jeff Hammond graduated from East Carolina University. He had played soccer at his university, but due to his injury in 1975, he had to stop playing soccer for the rest of his life.

NASCAR race

Jeff Hammond began his NASCAR career in 1974 as a tire changer, but eventually went to work as a jackman. In 1982, he was promoted to crew chief at Junior Johnson Motorsports for Darell Waltrip and won his second straight championship. The combination of Hammond and Waltrip became the greatest crew chief-driver winning 43 races during the 1980s.

The duo established Darrell Waltrip Motorsports in 1991. The combination later failed to show the magic they did in the 1980s. Darell then worked as crew chief for Chad Little at Roush Racing and for a period, Jeff Hammond worked with Kurt Bush as crew chief.

Jeff Hammond worked with four NASCAR champions in his career through 2000 and then moved to FOX Sports starting his broadcasting career.

Jeff Hammond was the only one who got his start on television as an announcer, but also Darell Waltrip, his long-time friend. In 2001, Jeff Hammond joined Fox Sports 1 as an analyst for NASCAR Race Hub. His journey for FOX NASCAR Sunday was from 2001 to 2013 and then starting in 2014 he began covering stories for Fox NASCAR from pit road.

Jeff Hammond demonstrated his experience as a NASCAR analyst for Fox Sports in practice and qualifying for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series and NASCAR Xfinity Series.
