  1. He was interested in hip-hop music and breakdance even as a young boy and practiced between classes and during lunch breaks with friends.
  2. As a youth, he was interested in rap and in 2003 became a member of a Seattle-based breakdance group Art of Movement .
  3. After observing how he spent more time dancing than studying, his mother asked him to audition for South Korean agency JYP Entertainment and in 2004 he was accepted as a trainee with the agency.
  4. In 2005, he finally moved to South Korea to further his dance, rapping and singing studies and learn the Korean language.
  5. He took part in Mnet ‘s dance reality show Hot Blood Men 2008 that showed the extreme training journey of 12 trainees who would become a boy band called One Day that later split into 2 boy bands at 2 AM and 2 PM .
  6. Im Hot Blood Men Jay was placed at the top due to most fan votes and eventually became the leader of the boy band 14:00 .
  7. He made his official debut with boy band 14:00 on September 4, 2008.

In September 2009, he became embroiled in a controversy in which some controversial comments from 2005 about Korea were discovered on his MySpace account. Although the comments were written in English, they were translated into their native language by Korean media and there were many negative articles about him, for which he later officially apologized and shamed and regretted his forgotten words, explaining the unhappiness and loneliness he felt in his early training days in a foreign country.
  9. After the controversy, many protesters demanded that he be removed from 2:00 PM but on September 7, 2009, JYP Entertainment ‘s President announced that Jay would continue his career as part of 2:00 PM .
  10. On September 8, 2009, following his controversy, Jay announced at his official fan cafe that he was leaving the boy band and returning to his hometown in the United States.
