An actress of immense prestige in the London and New York theater, the big screen had so far missed her except for some ‘indie’ productions. However, her second Oscar nomination may provide Janet McTeer with a huge springboard.
Born in Newcastle upon Tyne, the city in the northeast of England, on May 8, 1961, Janet McTeer studied as a child at the Queen Anne School for Girls. She subsequently enrolled in drama at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.
She took her first steps in the theater with the Royal Exchange Theatre, and later played a historical figure, the poet Vita Sackville-West in the BBC series Portrait of a Marriage . She debuted in the cinema with a small intervention as a secretary inCrescent Street , which starred Sigourney Weaver and Michael Caine . Soon she was given larger roles, such as the housekeeper inWuthering Heights (1992) and the painter Vanessa Bell , sister of Virginia Woolf , inCarrington . She was also the narrator ofVelvet Goldmine , although she did not appear physically.
His theatrical consecration came when he played Nora, in Ibsen’s “Dollhouse”, a production that earned him praise from critics in London and New York, where he won a Tony as a tip. She and she gave the bell in the cinema when she starred inGavin O’Connor ‘s Tumbleweeds ,in which she played a woman who moved with her daughter every time she had a romantic failure. The actress caused a sensation at Sundance, she won the Golden Globe and earned an Oscar nomination.
He could have profited from the success to establish himself, but nevertheless, in cinema it did not go very well afterwards. She played a one-eyed taxidermy aficionado, always dressed in black, inTerry Gilliam ‘s Tideland ,which had neither an audience nor hardly any positive reviews, took part inAs You Like It , one of Kenneth Branagh ‘s less-circulated Shakespeare adaptations , and little else. She decided to concentrate more on the theater – Phyllida Lloyd directed her as the lead in Mary Stuart’s “Mary, Queen of Scots” in London – and in series like Five Days , The Amazing Mrs. Pritchard and Sense & Sensibility (2008) .
But it was a matter of time before he hit the movies again, taking into account his high level. She finally she has made it withAlbert Nobbs , where he almost eclipses the protagonist and promoter of the film, none other than Glenn Close , playing another character dedicated to painting who hides a secret. Thanks to this work, she has been nominated for the Golden Globe, the Independent Spirits and the Oscar for supporting actress. She has also been one of the inhabitants of the town where Daniel Radcliffe arrives , inThe Woman in Black , a horror film with greater commercial ambition than the rest of his filmography.
Janet McTeer is not married, and otherwise elegantly conceals her private life. She was distinguished as an Officer of the Order of the British Empire.
