Born on February 15, 1951 in Hayes (Great Britain), Joyce Penelope Wilhelmina Falkenberg is the daughter of John Benjamin, a renowned doctor specializing in obstetrics, and Mieke, a nurse of Dutch origin. She saw that she had possibilities as an actress, even though she never considered herself a hottie. “I ordered some long legs, but they never arrived. I have an eye of each color. My nose looks like a ski slope. I would never win a beauty pageant,” she has said. She decided to enroll in the Arts Educational school, and immediately decided to take Jane Seymour as a stage name, like the third wife of Henry VIII.
She made her film debut at the hands of Richard Attenborough , who offered her a small appearance as a chorus girl in Oh, what a pretty war! , from 1969. She fell in love with the filmmaker’s son, Michael Attenborough, an occasional television director, whom she married in 1971, but living together was a disaster, so they divorced two years later.
Her first major role was a Jewish woman seeking refuge from the Nazis in The Only Path . Attenborough turned to her again to be part of the cast of Young Winston , a partial biography of Churchill.
