- He started playing football when he was 5 years old, playing at a local club called Ločan.
- When the Olimpija Ljubljana team was disbanded after the end of the 2004/2005 season, he moved to a team called Bezigrad, which was being re-formed at the time. After a short time the name was changed to Olimpija Ljubljana.
- In 2009, Jan declined the offer from Italian club Empoli and instead opted for a tryout for Fulham. In the end, he didn’t leave his club Olimpija Ljubljana and extended the contract until 2011.
- On June 14, 2010, the Slovenia international accepted the offer from Benfica, from where he was loaned out to another Portuguese team, Beira-Mar.
- He was also loaned out to Olhanense during the 2010-2011 season.
- In July 2013, Jan didn’t take part in a pre-season practice as he wasn’t signed for Benfica. However, the situation was later described as a “misunderstanding” and he extended his deal until 2018.
- He was named Best Goalkeeper of the Year for his performances in the 2014 UEFA Europa League, allowing after just three goals in a total of 13 games.
- On July 16, 2014, Oblak was transferred to Spanish side Atlético Madrid. He replaced Thibaut Courtois, who moved back to English club Chelsea after his loan period expired.
