James mcavoy
He’s still not one of the most popular faces on the big screen, but he’s not a complete stranger either. He feels lucky, because for some time now he has managed to string together several jobs that are of interest to him. Something that he knows only happens to a few.
James McAvoy was born on April 21, 1979 in Glasgow (Scotland). His parents divorced when he was 7 years old and he and his sister moved to live with his grandparents, where they spent the rest of their childhood. As he has commented on occasion, he began to study acting almost by rebound. At home they gave him permission and he was not very sure what else to do, so he decided to try. He studied at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and moved to London when he finished. His first film role was in 1995 as a supporting role in the thriller The Near Rooms . From then on, he combined his film work with some appearance in television series such as the miniseries The Children of Dune (2003).
His first appearance in a title with some relevance was at Wimbledon (2004), again as a secondary. The film starred Paul Bettany and Kirsten Dunst . Then Disney gave him the opportunity to participate in The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (2005). It was with a supporting role, although on a larger scale than what he had done to date. McAvoy became Tumnus, the faun in the service of the wicked White Witch. A year later, he abandoned his “faunian” ears to face the first leading role of his life. It was in The Last King of Scotland , where he gave the reply to a superb Forest Whitaker, who won an Oscar for his portrayal of dictator Idi Amin . McAvoy played a young doctor who, through a series of twists of fate, ends up working directly for the bloody ruler. From this moment on, his career took a radical turn. It cannot be said that he has become a blockbuster, but the boy has spun a few titles that have not gone unnoticed by the public. The first of these was Young Jane Austen (2007), where he fell in love with Anne Hathaway . Immediately afterwards came Atonement (2007), a film that was favored by critics. McAvoy did not abandon period dramas, although this time he lived a stormy and impossible love story with Keira Knightley.
Already in possession of something of a name in the industry, McAvoy made the leap to make his Hollywood debut. His first and to date only title in the film mecca has been Wanted (2008). The truth is that his debut couldn’t have been in another ‘Made in Hollywood’ movie. It is a fast-paced action film where he has shared the bill with Morgan Freeman and Angelina Jolie . Tested the North American experience, McAvoy has returned to the old continent to shoot The Last Station -which will be released in 2009-, a drama about the life of Tolstoy where he has worked together with Christopher Plummer -who plays the writer- and Helen Mirren. Another proper name in this cast is that of Anne-Marie Duff , with whom James has been married for two years.
McAvoy’s career is going through a very good moment, something he is aware of. But it is also true that interpreting is his job and his way of earning a living. “What attracts me about the jobs I’ve done in recent years is the job offer. I’ve auditioned for every job I’ve gotten. So it’s not just a matter of getting hired. Of course I like the things I’ve done, I’ve been very lucky because the work I’ve done – I think – has a certain level. But if they only offered me roles that were crap, I would do them anyway because I’m an actor and I need to work,” says McAvoy.
