BIOGRAPHY OF JAMES BLUNT

James Blunt (born James Hillier Blount) is an English singer-songwriter, record producer and former British Army officer. He became popularly known for his songs ‘You’re Beautiful’ and ‘Goodbye My Lover’.

Blunt rose to prominence in 2004 with the release of his showcase album Back to Bedlam, achieving global notoriety with the singles ‘That is no joke’ ‘Farewell My Lover’. Back to Bedlam was the UK’s top 2000s album.

Blunt was a watch officer in the Life Guards, a British Army mounted force regiment, and served under NATO during the Kosovo War in 1999.

He has earned a few accolades, including two Brit Awards – winner of Best British Male in 2006 – two MTV Video Music Awards and two Ivor Novello Awards, as well as five Grammy nominations.

James Blunt Education

He was educated at Elstree School in Woolhampton, Berkshire and Harrow School, where he obtained degrees in physics, chemistry and economics. Blunt continued his studies in Aerospace Manufacturing Engineering and Sociology at the University of Bristol, where he obtained a BSc (Hons) in Sociology in 1996. He was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Music in 2016 by the University of Bristol.

James Blunt’s career

As his education was sponsored by the military, James Blunt was legally required to join the Defense Force for at least four years. Commissioned into the Life Guards, he soon ascended the ladder and was made a captain.

In 1999, he joined the NATO deployment in Kosovo as an armored reconnaissance officer. An avid skier, he eventually became the best skier in the entire “Royal Armored Corps”.
While still serving in the armed forces, he recorded a demo. A friend of his asked him to forward the demo to Todd Interland who was Elton John’s manager.

The track “Goodbye My Lover” impressed Interland. After six years of service, he resigned from the British Army in 2002 to pursue his musical dreams and adopted an easier-to-spell stage name Blunt. Although he was signed to music publishers EMI, he struggled to earn a recording contract.

In 2003, he caught the attention of American musician, Linda Perry, through his promotional tape while on tour in London. This caused a long-awaited turn in Blunt’s career and he soon signed Linda to a recording contract.

2003 proved to be a big year for Blunt’s career and he released his debut album ‘Back to Bedlam’. Produced in association with Tom Rothrock, the album was recorded at Rothrock’s home studio in Los Angeles.

His most successful single to date, ‘You’re Beautiful’, which shot him into the limelight, was part of the ‘Back to Bedlam’ album. It peaked at no. 1 on the pop charts in several countries including Great Britain, the United States, Spain, Canada and the Netherlands.

In 2007 he released the album, ‘All the Lost Souls’ which helped him develop a fan base included the hit singles ‘1973’, ‘Same Mistake’, ‘Carry You Home’, ‘I Really Want You’, ‘Love, Love, Love’ and ‘This is my song’.

‘Some Kind of Trouble’, her third studio album, released in 2010, however, failed to repeat her previous big hit and received mixed reviews from music critics. He debuted at no. 4 on the UK Albums Chart, and at no. 11 on the Billboard 200. The album included singles such as ‘Stay the Night’ and ‘If Time Is All I Have’. It has been hailed as ‘a move towards unassuming love songs’ by ‘Allmusic’.

‘Moon Landing’, her last album was released in 2013. Her first single ‘Bonfire Heart’ reached no. 4 in the UK Singles Chart a few weeks after its release. It was also featured in the music charts of several countries around the world.

JAMES BLUNT AGE | BIRTHDAY

Blunt was born on February 22, 1974 in Tidworth, Hampshire, England. He celebrates his birthday on 22 nd February every year.

JAMES BLUNT FAMILY

Parents

James Blunt was born as the first of three children of Colonel Charles Blount and Jane Ann Farran Blount. His father was a cavalry officer in the 13th/18th Royal Hussars, then a helicopter pilot and colonel in the Army Air Corps. His mother started a ski chalet business in Méribel. The Blount family has a long history of military service, dating back to the arrival of their Danish ancestors in England in the 10th century.

James Blunt Father

The most recent single, Monsters, released by the British artist, comes as a tribute to his father and his role model in critical condition.

Blunt’s father, Charles, had been diagnosed with incessant stage four kidney disease. He shows up at the end of the heartbreaking clip.

The camera initially focuses around Blunt, on one edge, singing as tears appear in his eyes. At that point, it works to find that he is sitting next to each other with his father, who tenderly holds his child’s arm while listening to the emotional lyrics.

In what was likely an extremely difficult video for both men to record. Blunt sings:

“I’m not your son, you’re not my father / We’re just two grown men saying goodbye / No need to forgive, no need to forget / I know your mistakes and you know mine. And while you sleep I’ll try to make you proud / So daddy, don’t you close your eyes? / Don’t be afraid, it’s my turn / To hunt the monsters. ‘

After a career in the military, James Blunt may have been “molded” to not show much sentiment, but this tune turns into a truly touching farewell to his father.

Many viewers of the music video agree and have posted their responses and positive notes of consolation on the web.

Following an interview, in October 2019, Blunt opened up about his father’s quest for a kidney donor and how it influenced the songs on his latest album Once Upon A Mind.

Blunt said: ‘He’s a man I’ve looked up to all my life, he was a colonel in the army. He was very healthy, never drank, never smoked, very fit and healthy – now he is sick.
