She is the daughter of dentist father Jack Smith and homemaker mother Margaret Ellen . Jack was of Russian Jewish descent and Margaret was of English, Scottish, Irish and Welsh heritage. Jaclyn was raised along with her brother De Ella Thomas Smith in their Texas hometown.
He completed his high school at Mirabeau B. Lamar High School in 1964. He was studying psychology and drama at Trinity University, dropped out of college and moved to New York to join the Balanchine School of American Ballet.
