Early life and career

Iris Hermosillo was born in Hidalgo del Parral in Chihuahua, Mexico, and raised in Phoenix, Arizona. Her family moved to Arizona from Chihuahua when she was very young. Iris is a native of Phoenix and is the only child of her parents.

Iris Hermosillo attended Camelback High School and graduated from ASU’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication with a minor in broadcast journalism. She began her career in Joplin, Missouri, working as a weekend anchor and weather reporter. According to her, it was the perfect place to learn how to forecast all kinds of weather. Later, she went back to school and earned her certification in Broadcast Meteorology from Mississippi State University.

While in Kansas City, Iris Hermosillo was one of the first reporters to arrive in Joplin after the 2011 tornado. In fact, Iris worked around the clock to send images and also shared the stories of those affected. It was one of the most difficult stories she has ever covered.

In August 2009, Iris Hermosillo joined the KCTV5 team as a weekend morning meteorologist. Similarly, she also hosted ‘Que Pasa Kc’, which was an award-winning weekly show that focused on highlighting the Hispanic community in Kansan City. However, she currently works at ABC15. Iris joined the network in December 2013 and works as a weekday meteorologist at ABC15 Mornings.

Some of her most memorable broadcast experiences include being tased by the local sheriff’s department for a story and also helping out KSNF’s chief meteorologist. Similarly, some of her proudest accomplishments are when she was sent to Mexico City to shadow then-Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano as she received the Meredith/Cronkite Scholarship, where she had 1-10 journalism students chosen from throughout the country, and also when he met with Mexican President Felipe Calderón.
