If you are dating, no one is responsible for your bills in Canada__ Lady advises

A Nigerian lady identified as Juliet Kego on Monday advises Nigerian immigrants aspiring for Canada that life is different in the country compared to Nigeria.

In a string of tweets, she said moving to Canada as a Nigerian you have to unlearn a lot of things. And learn healthier habits or lifestyles e.g. dating is different in a lot of ways.

No one is responsible for your bills, or for funding your lifestyle. If you can’t afford a cab, you take the bus or bike or walk…etc

“If your colleagues invite you to any celebratory lunch, dinner, the movies etc., please also come with your own funds because the bills will likely be split. Expect to pay for alcoholic beverages (at the bar) when you are invited to social events/weddings unless hosted by Nigerians.

“There is hardly any “rich uncle/aunty” to ‘dash’ your free money. The rich uncles/aunties are also paying their mortgages/bills/taxes – the higher you earn, the more than taxes. It is socially unacceptable to beg random folks for money online/offline unless it is a “go-fund-me.”

PAY YOUR DEBTS ON TIME

“This is a trust-driven and credit-based system. Your ability to pay your bills and debts on time, e.g, even if it is a minimum payment on credit cards, is valued overpaying late and in full. Learn a lot about how credit works and your credit/FICO score.

“The system rewards DISCIPLINE, DELAYED GRATIFICATION, DCA and LIVING WITHIN YOUR MEANS. If you are a 2-person household, at least one should register a business, even if you work 9 to 5. File all your taxes, even if you do not earn a lot. File personal/business. Keep all receipts.”

However, the reason most people choose to immigrate is simple; they want a better life for themselves and their loved ones. If you are one of those people, you should be applauded for that. However, we always hear the naysayers in our ears: the grass isn’t always greener on the other side.

Sometimes they are right, but ninety-nine per cent of the time, it’s our own fault when things don’t turn out the way we want and we decide to give up and head back to where we came from.

The truth is, when you arrive in Canada, the grass will be green under your feet. It will also be short. But the Canadian ground is fertile, and as long as you water the grass under your feet, it will grow up around you and all your hopes and dreams will become reality. Life in Canada, as they say, like with anything, will see starting out to be a little tough.

But as you become more familiar with the people, the country and the culture, hardships will begin to ease and you will start to settle into your new home country without even realising it.
