A Nigerian man identified as Emmanuel Anenih has been awarded compensation of 5.5 million Naira after suing MTN in Court for unlawfully deducting 50 Naira from his airtime in the name of unsolicited caller tunes he never subscribed to.

The lawyer had on October 2014 sued MTN Telecommunication Service Provider for deducting money from his account illegal for unsolicited caller tunes.

He had complained to MTN about the illegal deductions which MTN evidently acknowledged and subsequently sent him N700 as compensation.

Not satisfied with the compensation, Emmanuel Anenih dragged MTN to The Abuja High court. The court however noted that the N700 bonus did not amount to compensation for the bridge to the plaintiff quick enjoyment and ordered MTN to pay Mr Emmanuel N5m for or disturbing his peace and another 500,000 for legal expenses.

The Judge in charge of the case, Justice Ishaq Bello, also ordered for such extortion to stop while warning service providers not to impose adverts and unsolicited services on their customers.
