ICYMI: Emefiele Sues DSS, Demands Justice, Freedom of Movement

The unsettled Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, has sued the Department of State Services (DSS) for violating his fundamental rights.

Emefiele filed the suit at the Federal High Court in Abuja on Tuesday, June 14, 2023.

In a preliminary objection filed against the fundamental rights enforcement suit instituted by Emefiele, the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and the DSS told the Federal Capital Territory High Court that the detention was backed by the order of a magistrates’ court and prayed for the court to dismiss the motion with cost.

In the suit, Emefiele is seeking a declaration that the DSS’s invitation and subsequent detention of him on June 8, 2023, was illegal, unconstitutional, and a violation of his fundamental rights.

He is also seeking an order from the court restraining the DSS from further interfering with his personal liberty and freedom of movement. Emefiele’s lawyer, Mike Ozekhome, said that the DSS’s action was “a clear case of harassment, intimidation, and a deliberate attempt to muzzle and silence” the CBN governor.

Ozekhome said that the DSS’s action was also a violation of Emefiele’s right to privacy and his right to participate in the political process. The DSS had invited Emefiele to its headquarters in Abuja on June 8, 2023, for questioning over his alleged involvement in the presidential race.
