Early Life And Education
Hogan was born in Augusta, Georgia, on August 11, 1953, was the son of construction worker Pietro “Peter” Bollea , who was Italian, and homemaker and dance teacher Ruth V. Bollea, with Panamanian, Scottish, and French ancestry. When he was one and a half years old, his family moved to Port Tampa, Florida. As a young boy, he played baseball in Little League. Hogan attended Robinson High School. He started watching professional wrestling when he was 16 years old, and he admired Dusty Rhodes during high school. He often went to watch wrestling matches at the Tampa Sportatorium, where he first noticed Superstar Billy Graham, who became his inspiration. Hogan wanted to achieve Graham’s distinctive appearance after seeing him on TV.
Hogan was also a musician and spent ten years playing bass guitar in various rock bands based in Florida. He then studied at Hillsborough Community College and the University of South Florida. However, his music commitments began to interfere with his college studies, leading him to drop out of the University of South Florida. In 1976, Hogan, along with two local musicians, formed a band called Ruckus, which gained popularity in the Tampa Bay area. During his free time, Hogan worked out at Hector’s Gym in the Tampa Bay region, where he began weightlifting. Many of the wrestlers who competed in the Florida region frequented the bars where Ruckus performed, including Jack and Gerald Brisco, who were brothers and a wrestling tag team in the Florida region.
Career
Hogan started wrestling in 1977 and became famous when he joined World Wrestling Federation (WWF, now WWE) in 1983. He played an all-American hero and was a big part of the 1980s professional wrestling boom. He was the main attraction at WWF’s annual event, WrestleMania, eight times. Hogan also starred in Saturday Night’s Main Event and The Main Event, headlining 31 shows combined. He won the WWF Championship five times during his first run, with his first reign being the second-longest ever. He’s the first wrestler to win two Royal Rumble matches in a row in 1990 and 1991. His match with Andre the Giant on WWF The Main Event in 1988 still holds the record for the most viewers on American TV for wrestling.
In 1993, Hogan left WWF to pursue acting. He returned to wrestling with World Championship Wrestling (WCW) in 1994, winning the WCW World Heavyweight Championship six times, with the longest reign. In 1996, he became “Hollywood” Hulk Hogan and led the New World Order (nWo), a famous wrestling group, during the “Monday Night Wars,” another big wrestling era. He headlined WCW’s Starrcade three times, including the most profitable event in 1997.
Hogan came back to WWF in 2002 after they bought WCW, winning the Undisputed WWF Championship for the sixth time before leaving in 2003. He joined the WWE Hall of Fame in 2005 and again in 2020 as part of the nWo.
