As a child, Stern studied in Washington-Rose Elementary School and Roosevelt Junior-Senior High School . At the same time, Stern attended a Hebrew school.
At 15 he joined South Side High School and graduated from there in 1972.
In 1972, Stern wanted to get a degree in communications from Boston University , but his average school grades forced him to spend the first 2 years in his College of Basic Studies . During his sophomore year, he worked at campus radio station WTBU, playing records, reading the news, and conducting interviews. In 1974 he was finally admitted to the University School of Public Communications .
Later in 1975 he earned a Diploma from the Radiotechnical Institute of Electronics in Fredericksburg, Virginia earning a First Class Telephone Operator License. In May 1976, Stern graduated with a 3.8 GPA in Radio and Film and a minor in English and Speech.
