The son of Andrée Belden and Howard Brush Dean, Jr., Howard Dean was born in East Hampton, New York, on November 17, 1948. While his father was a senior executive in the banking sector, his mother was a professional art appraiser. With his three younger brothers, he grew up. While touring Southeast Asia in 1974, Charles, one of his brothers, was taken prisoner by the Pathet Lao and killed by the North Vietnamese.
Dean studied at the Manhattan Browning School until he was 13 years old. After that, he attended Rhode Island’s St. George’s School, a prep school. He also spent one year in 1966 studying at Felsted School in the UK. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Yale University in 1971 before earning his medical degree from Yeshiva University’s Albert Einstein College of Medicine in 1978.
