How to help Afghan refugees in 2022

August 2021 saw the takeover of Afghanistan by the Taliban. However, in this article, we will discuss how to help Afghan refugees in 2022.

Without a doubt, organizations across the globe have been working to address the country’s growing humanitarian emergency. And also the U.S employed thousands of Afghan citizens as interpreters, translators, cultural advisors, drivers, and more.

With the Taliban enjoying now being in control of Afghanistan, these individuals and their families are still in grave danger.

Here is How To Help the Afghan Refugees in 2022

Volunteer:

One of the best things you can do to support the Afghan refugees is to volunteer to help resettle them. For example, the Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service are still asking for volunteers to help refugees upon arrival with airport pickups, meal assistance, mentorship, tutoring and more. You can participate if you’re in one of the areas where refugees are arriving, and there’s a standby list to join for other areas too.

As of last year, Lutheran Social Services said it has worked to resettle more than 250 Afghans in the U.S., and it expects a “steady and increasing” number of referrals in the coming period.

Autumn Kendrick, a spokesperson for the nonprofit, said “the extraordinary help of the community” has made it possible to accommodate the recent influx of refugees.

Advocate and Stay Informed

Another beautiful thing you can do to support the Afghan refugees is to advocate. You can call on Congress( American) to pass the Afghan Adjustment Act that would allow evacuees from Afghanistan to apply for permanent legal status in the United States. You can also reach out to your representatives and urge immediate action to help expand Afghan resettlement programs.

More so, you can seek information for loved ones currently trapped in Afghanistan or who are in the process of fleeing and document how you can be of help. As an American, you can email the White House.

The International Rescue Committee has an email form through which you can urge the Biden administration to take immediate steps to ensure “vulnerable Afghans have pathways to safety.”

Donation

Another interesting way you can help the Afghan refugees is to donate to organisations that are helping advocate for the lives of Afghans. What you must know is that your donations help provide food, housing assistance, job training, gender-based violence counselling, and other critical needs for arriving Afghan citizens into the United States.
