Hoda Kotb is an American journalist, writer, and television personality. She is co-main anchor of NBC News Today’s morning show and co-host of its fourth-hour entertainment program. Kotb was previously a reporter for the Dateline NBC TV news magazine service.

HODA KOTB: EARLY CHILDHOOD, EDUCATION, FAMILY

She was born in Norman, Oklahoma on August 9, 1964 and grew up in Morgantown, West Virginia and Virginia, Alexandria. Similarly, she spent the entire 1990s in New Orleans. Kotb’s parents are from Egypt. The journalist and her family spent a year in Egypt and Nigeria. She has a brother, Adel and Hala, a niece. His mother, Sameha, works at the Library of Congress. His father, Abdel Kader Kotb, was a renewable energy specialist and featured in Who’s Who of Technology. He died in 1986 at the age of 51.

In 1982, she graduated from Fort Hunt High School. She was named homecoming queen and was asked to speak at her class’s bachelor’s degree. Kotb was a member of the Delta Delta female sorority, Beta Nu Chapter, during her college years at Virginia Tech. In 1986, Kotb graduated from broadcast journalism with a Bachelor of Arts. At Virginia Tech’s 2008 graduation, Kotb was the keynote speaker at her alma mater and played Metallica’s ‘Enter Sandman’ on her iPod in her address. She was elected to the Virginia Tech Alumni Association Board of Directors in 2010, serving a three-year term.

After college, Kotb’s first on-air job was at WXVT, a CBS affiliate in Greenville, Mississippi. Kotb then moved from 1988 to 1989 as a reporter at WQAD, an ABC affiliate, in Moline, IL. From 1989 to 1991, she was a weekend host and reporter for the CBS WINK affiliate in Fort Myers, Florida. In New Orleans, Louisiana, Kotb was an anchor and reporter for CBS affiliate WWL from 1992 to 1998. In 2011, Martina McBride asked Kotb “I’m Gonna Love You Through This,” a dedicated ballad to cancer survivors, for use in its music video.

In April 1998, Kotb officially joined NBC News as a reporter for NBC Dateline and other NBC News channels. She was the first anchor of the 4 a.m. weekday morning show From Today at 10:00 a.m. In September 2007, Kathie Lee Gifford returned in April 2008 as co-host. Gifford was then replaced in April 2019 by Jenna Bush Hager, after Gifford left the show.

Kotb published a bestselling New York Times memoir in October 2010, Hoda: How I Survived War Zones, Bad Hair, Cancer, and Kathie Lee. Kotb won the Edward R. Murrow Award for reporting in 2002. In 2003 and 2008, Kotb won its first Gracie Awards. In 2019, during their tenure as co-hosts, Kotb and Gifford won a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Insightful Talk Show Host.

HODA KOTB: PERSONAL LIFE AND HUSBAND

In 2005, Kotb married Burzis Kanga, a former tennis coach at the University of New Orleans. In 2008, the marriage ended in divorce. Kotb underwent mastectomy and reconstructive surgery for breast cancer in March 2007 and has been an advocate for breast cancer awareness ever since. Today’s cameras allowed Kotb to follow her through her battle with cancer. She recorded and used the story on the show to raise awareness for breast cancer. Kotb has had a relationship with New York financier Joel Schiffman since 2013.

On February 21, 2017, on Today, Kotb revealed that she had adopted a baby girl named Haley Joy Kotb. Kotb came by phone today April 16, 2019 to announce that she has adopted a second baby girl named Hope Catherine Kotb. Additionally, Kotb revealed live on November 25, 2019, that she got engaged to Schiffman.
