HLE’s full name is Hlengiwe Ntombela (Apparently, her stage name is only a shorter version of her name). She was born in Kwaggafontein, South Africa. She grew up in Newcastle, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Ntombela’s Gospel Music career comes as no surprise as her father was a bishop at Potters House Family Church.
Following her passion for Interior design, she studied at Style Design College in Durban, South Africa. According to reports, she couldn’t finish her study at the college as a result of her ministry and she had to pursue a music-related qualification at UKZN Howard College.
Career
HLE’s career as a musician began at the age of 8 when her father requested that she join her sister on stage to sing Tramaine Hawkins and Mahalia Jackson’s “I Found The Answer”. Since then, her musical abilities became more prominent and her journey into the craft began, although she wasn’t in the “spotlight”.
During her first year at Style Design College, she met former Joyous Celebration bassist, Bheka Mthethwa who took her to Oasis Church led by Pastor Themba Mthethwa in Umlazi. She joined their worship team in 2011 and met with ace singer, Ntokozo Mbambo and her husband Nqubeko Mbatha who performed at an event hosted by Oasis church.
After experiencing HLE’s performance, the couple invited her to join the recording of Ntokozo’s album, Filled, which she did and equally featured in many of their major shows and recordings after then. HLE’s musical career, therefore, began officially as a backup singer for Ntokozo Mbambo.
In 2012, barely 3 years after joining Oasis church, HLE was appointed as the music director, due to the absence of Khaya Mthethwa who was participating (and eventually won) in the SA Idols Season 8. In the same year, she was invited to join the popular South African Gospel Band, Joyous Celebration, to do a tribute to Khaya.
She eventually joined the team, even though it took six years to say Yes to the initial invitation by the co-founder of the team, Lindelani Mkhize. According to Gospelminds, HLE declined the invitation at first because she didn’t feel experienced enough.
In later years, the artist was asked by popular American Gospel artist, Israel Houghton to help out in his African tours. She has also worked with Judith Sephuma, who requested that she join her album production.
Launching her solo career, HLE released her debut Gospel album, Your Kingdom on Earth in 2019. In the same year, she was featured on Benjamin Dube’s Glory in His Presence album.
HLE has recorded an iTunes chart number one within just a few years of her solo career. Her 2020 debut solo single, “Dwala”, topped the charts in no time. Her other songs include “You Are” and “Nguwe”.
Motown Record Deal
On February 17, 2022, it was announced that the artiste signed a record deal with American-based record label, Motown. The label is parented by Universal Music Group and Capitol Music Group. HLE’s affiliation with the label puts her on the list with international gospel acts like Kierra Sheard and Tasha Cobbs.
Awards
In 2021, HLE was nominated as the Best Female Artist of the Year at the South African Music Awards.

HLE hosts South African Gospel musicians on her weekly show titled “Adlib”. The show premiered on One Gospel, Channel 331, DSTv on July 1, 2020. She also hosts a Gospel show titled “VIP INVITE”, where she “gives viewers front-row seats on Sundays to an inspirational festival of praise and worship from the comfort of their homes”.
The show airs on DStv every Sunday.Â
Business
Few weeks ago, the artiste launched her fashion brand, YKOE. This does not come as a surprise as HLE’s stage and show appearances are always graced with unique styles.
Personal Life
The South-African singer got married to Joyous Celebration’s music director and pianist, Siyanqoba Mthethwa in 2016.
