INTERVIEW WITH HENRY SIMMONS

At a recent press conference held on the top-secret set, Collider (along with a handful of other media outlets) spoke to actor Henry Simmons about the events of the episode and the lasting effects of being picked up by the spirit of revenge. During the interview, he talked about how shocked and flattered he was to find out about this twist on storytelling, watching Gabriel Luna’s performance while forming his own, how he will live the experience will give Mack a new respect for Robbie, which Mack is thinking. the new SHIELD director ( Jason O’Mara ) and mending his relationship with Daisy ( Chloé Bennet ).

Question: What was your reaction when you found out what was going to happen in this episode?

HENRY SIMMONS: I was shocked! I was completely shocked and flattered. It is a very large property. Ghost Rider has a lot of responsibilities. So, I started my work in advance. The only thing they told me was they said, ‘Okay, we want you to have something a little different from Robbie Reyes and what Gabe [Luna] is doing. We want to give your opinion. And when I got home and started thinking about it, I was like, ‘It’s already different because it’s me. What I have to work on is not difference, but similarity. It is the spirit that is similar. So I looked at what Gabe was doing and tried to incorporate some of the things he was doing physically, but in my own way. Let me tell you, that was great for an episode, but I wouldn’t want to do it all the time. Oh my God! Damn it! Where’s the humor?! It’s a little different. It’s hard to make jokes when you’re a skull.

We know that Robbie had time to control the Ghost Rider mind. So what does it do for Mack not to have that control?

SIMMONS: It was easier, in a way. As an actor, you let go and let the Ghost Rider speak through you. It was not a struggle. But I will say every single person inhabited by Ghost Rider, there are some residual effects afterward, and that’s going to be interesting to see.

How will the Ghost Rider experience affect Mack in the future?

SIMMONS: The Ghost Rider has a way of exploiting pain and rage and your vulnerability. He has a way of tapping into that and using it for strength, and when he does, it opens wounds and opens doors that people have tried to close for a long time, or may have buried. So when Mack is no longer the Ghost Rider, he has issues to deal with, and because of those issues, it affects other relationships he has. I’m grateful to the writers for giving it to me. It was absolutely wonderful.

Does Ghost Rider’s experience give him different feelings towards Robbie? Does he have a new sense of respect for what he’s dealing with?

SIMMONS: Absolutely! Very good question. You’ve seen in the episodes that have already aired that he doesn’t care about Robbie. He’s another super-powered person who’s unpredictable, and he just doesn’t like that kind of stuff. But after experiencing the Rider’s spirit and knowing what it’s all about, he absolutely has a lot of respect for him, as well as empathy. He understands that it is a burden. It is in no way a gift.

Because Mack has been the every man on the team, did you think you would ever experience being a superhero like this?

SIMMONS: When they were just handing out inhuman powers like a deck of cards, I was like, ‘Where’s mine?!’ And then they called me and were like, ‘Yeah, you know, we’re not going to give you powers.’ I was like, “Okay. OK.’ They wanted me to be the guy to portray [not having powers] because I’m the biggest guy on the show. That’s why I’m knocked out, all the time. It goes to show that ‘Oh, wow, if he’s beaten, then whoever beats him must have some serious power.’ And I understand that. Coulson has a hand. Daisy has her powers. Now I like it. I love that Mack doesn’t have powers. I like that he’s not invincible and he can get hurt. That’s what I consider true bravery when you know the odds are stacked against you, but you keep going anyway. It’s really brave.

What does Mack think of Mace as a director?

SIMMONS: Mack distrusts authority, and especially Mace. He walks in and there’s something about him that’s unsettling. He has all that power, but he’s passive aggressive and he’s just too nice. Do you trust people like that? I do not. I think everyone feels that Coulson, even though he doesn’t have the title, is still the leader. With the misadventures and lack of authority that Mace should be involved in but isn’t, there will be trouble. But Mack ran into Coulson when he was there. I like this.

Once Mack is loyal to someone, he is unwavering in that loyalty. Now that Daisy is back on the team, what does that mean for him?

SIMMONS: It feels like the family is back together, but it’s not the same. Have you ever felt that, where there’s a friend or someone you care about, and when you finally connect with them, you’re together and connect, but it’s just not the same thing? That’s the feeling he has with Daisy. He will always love her. She’s family, but she’s going through some things that she won’t allow us to really help her with.

How does it feel to him to see her struggling, but not letting anyone help her?

SIMMONS: It’s frustrating. When you try to help someone you love and you know they need your help, and you know you can help them, but they keep you at a distance, you are frustrated. That doesn’t mean you like them any less, but it is frustrating. Because of the dynamics of these missions where I’m with Coulson and she’s about to do something else, there’s so much upheaval and so much going on that it doesn’t really give us time to sit down and really heal her and help her.

What do you think it will take to put them in a better place than they are now? Is there a way to fix this?

SIMMONS: Oh, absolutely! And I have a feeling it’s going to take something dramatic. She’ll have to recognize how much she means to Mack, whether it’s him protecting her and hurting himself in the process, or saving her or doing something that makes her realize he really cares about him and that it’s time for her to open up.
