Heather was enrolled at the University of the Pacific and was a veteran volleyball player in her college days. Her volleyball experience led her to earn a scholarship in 1988.

She was captain of the Universidad del Pacífico women’s volleyball team (Division 1) and led the team to the top five positions nationally from 1988 to 1991.

Her team reached the finals and became runner-up in the National Championship in 1990 and she graduated from college with a major in mass communication in 1992. Cox was also a member of the United States national volleyball team for eight years. from 1987 to 1995.
