According to the New York Times , Gibson visited General Harold Moore a few months before his death: “He was a phenomenal man, of great strength and character, brave and like a father to his troops, he managed to get most of his boys out of that wasp’s nest”, assured the filmmaker.
As David Moore , Harold’s son and also a soldier, explains , his father’s mantra was “Hate war, love American soldiers.” The soldier endured in an untenable position, curiously in a regiment that was the Seventh Cavalry, therefore heir to the one led in the Far West by General Custer at Little Big Horn. He did not lack decorations that recognized his courage and intelligence in combat, including the Distinguished Service Cross, the Legion of Merit, the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star and the Combat Infantry Badge.
