Greta Gerwig was born in Sacramento, California on the 4th of August, 1983, and she was brought up in the River Park neighbourhood. Her mother, Christine Gerwig was an OB-GYN nurse and her father, Gordon Gerwig worked for a credit union on small business loans. With the kind of close relationship she has with her parents, they made an appearance in Frances Ha as the parents of the character she played. Her older brother is a landscape architect and her sister is a manager at the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.
Greta Gerwig is of German, Irish, and English ancestry, and she was raised as a Unitarian Universalist. She attended St. Francis High School which was an All-girls Catholic School in Sacramento, she graduated from the school in 2002. At first, she picked up competitive fencing as a result of her interest in dance but had to quit due to the high costs. Again, she intended to study musical theatre in New York but ended up studying English and Philosophy, and graduating from Barnard College with a degree. Initially, Greta Gerwig wanted to become a playwright but went into acting following her declined admission to playwriting MFA programs. While still studying at Bernard College (2006), she was cast in a minor role in Hoe Swanberg’s LOL, and also appeared in Baghead by Jay and Mark Duplass, Afterwards, she began a partnership with Joe Swanberg, and they ended up co-writing Hannah Takes the Stairs (2007). In 2017, Greta Gerwig wrote and also made her solo directorial debut with the film, Lady Bird. The film premiered at the Telluride Film Festival and was theatrically released in November 2017.
