On September 1, 2014, German actor Gottfried John died of cancer. He made more than half a dozen films with Rainer Werner Fassbinder, but was not known by the general public until his appearance in the James Bond saga. He is survived by his wife, Brigitte.

His face was unforgettable since he had large, coarse features, which made the perfect appearance to embody evil and unscrupulous types. She had a long career, and participated in close to a hundred productions, although in most of them with secondary roles. His face became known as a result of GoldenEye , along with Pierce Brosnan , where he played Ourumov, a Russian general enemy of Bond.

Born in Berlin on August 29, 1942, he had a difficult childhood due to World War II. He didn’t know his father, who left them for another woman, and he was harshly raised by his mother. After a stay in East Prussia, they went to Paris when Gottfried was 15 years old. He began his on-camera career in a minor role in Café Oriental , a musical comedy starring Elke Sommer . In 1973 he would begin his collaboration with one of the German directors with the greatest projection in history: Rainer W. Fassbinder . After the miniseries The Connected World and after a supporting role in Mama Kuster’s Journey to Happiness(1975), it expanded its importance in subsequent films, such as A Year with Thirteen Moons (1978), A Song… Lili Marleen (1981) and especially The Marriage of María Braun (1979). She also stood out among the cast of the series Berlin Alexanderplatz (1980).

His name began to sound and he began various appearances in international productions, such as La noche del zorro (1990), a war film about World War II; The Bible: Abraham (1993) or the aforementioned GoldenEye (1995). Four years later he played Julius Caesar in the wacko comedy Asterix and Obelix vs. Caesar . Apart from some very Hollywood appearances, such as in Proof of Life (2000), it was common then to see him in historical-themed films, such as Balzac (1999), with Gérard Depardieu ; the Biblical Mary Magdalene (2000) or Augustus (My father, the Emperor)(2003). In 2009 she participated in the dark Spanish thriller Flores negras , directed by David Carreras , where she gave life to a former Cold War spy. Her last film job was in the family film Ruby, the Last Time Traveler .
