Ghallywood has been gaining popularity in Ghana just as Nollywood is in Nigeria. With an average revenue of $1.1 million, Ghallywood showcases Ghana’s rich culture and traditions through high-quality productions.

Collaborations with Nollywood have further elevated Ghana’s film industry, attracting attention from both local and international viewers. This success wouldn’t be possible without the hard work of people in the Ghallywood industry, especially the actors.

In this article, RNN will be discussing 20 Ghallywood actors of all time, these are actors who continually put in work to deliver excellence in their roles in movies and also put the industry out there to the world.

1. John Dumelo

John Dumelo (born 3 February 1984) is a Ghanaian actor and politician. On 1 April 2014, he emerged as the first Ghanaian to hit a million likes on Facebook. Aside from being an actor of international recognition, Dumelo is an entrepreneur. He launched his clothing line (J.Melo) in 2012. The actor is also known to be involved in both crop and animal farming.

John Dumelo has acted in several films, including the movies:  4Play, 40 Looks Good on You, A Northern Affair (2014), A Night with Her, and Black Men Rock (2018).

In January 2023, he was honoured by the University of Ghana for his philanthropic gestures to their students. John Dumelo is married to Gifty Mawunya Nkornu and they have 2 children.

2. Van Vicker

Joseph van Vicker (born 1 August 1977), better known as Van Vicker, is a Ghanaian actor, movie director and humanitarian. He is the chief executive officer of Sky + Orange production, a film production house. Vicker started out in the entertainment world on radio as a presenter at Groove 106.3 fm (1999–2000) and Vibe 91.9fm (2001–2004) and as a television personality for TV3 Ghana (1997–1999) & Metro TV (2000–2004), Vicker appeared in the Ghanaian television series Sun city, which depicted university life. He played the character of LeRoy King Jr., a Fine Arts student born in the U.S. who arrives at Sun City to complete his education. The series ran for a total of 10 episodes.

Soon, Vicker was cast in his first film Divine Love as a supporting character. This film coincidentally, was also the debut role for fellow actors Jackie Appiah and Majid Michel who were cast as the female and male leads respectively. Van Vicker is married to Adjoa Vicker and they are blessed with children.

3. Majid Michel

Majid Michel (born 22 September 1980) is a Ghanaian actor, model, television personality, evangelist and humanitarian. Majid Michel attended Mfantsipim School, along with fellow actor Van Vicker.

Michel entered professional acting by auditioning for a modelling agency; a neighbour had introduced him to that agency. He was invited to join the modelling agency, Super Model Agency, at the behest of his next-door neighbour. He starred in the television series Things We Do for Love, acquiring his nickname “Shaker” on the set.

Michel also made his Nigerian Nollywood debut in the 2009 romantic drama, Emerald, playing a leading role alongside Genevieve Nnaji. While Majid’s performance was commended, along with his strong on-screen chemistry with Nnaji, the film received largely mixed to negative reviews.

Prince David Osei (born 6 December 1983) is a Ghanaian actor, model, producer, director and philanthropist. He has featured in many Ghanaian and Nigerian movies, including Fortune Island, Last Night, Hero, Forbidden Fruit and others. He has also been featured in the American movie titled The Dead. He is married to Nana Ama Asieduaa.

5. Kwaku Sintim-Misa

Kwaku Sintim-Misa aka “KSM” (born 1956) is a Ghanaian actor, director, satirist, talk show host, and author. He also has his own shows on radio and television. He is the host of The KSM Show.

KSM launched his acting career with a variety of Off-Broadway and Public Theatre roles. KSM became the first African to stage an original Off-Broadway play when he produced Thoughts of a Confused Black Man, a one-man show about race in the United States.

KSM started a talk show where he used a combative, confrontational style which shocked his listeners into discussing relevant national issues. He continued to refine his style with the show Nyame Som Ye De, which inspired Ghanaians to think beyond religion to define their broader spirituality.

6. Adjetey Anang

Adjetey Anang (born 8 July 1973) is a Ghanaian actor, popularly known as “Pusher”, which was his screen name in the television series Things We Do for Love. He has featured in many Ghanaian movies, including Deadly VoyageA Sting in a TaleThe Perfect Picture and others. He has also featured in a Dutch movie titled Slavery.

Anang has starred in the Ghanaian TV series Yolo which advises and directs the youth on adolescence, etc. In July 2023, he launched his book: ‘Adjetey Anang: A Story of Faith, Imperfection and Resilience’. The book chronicles his experience from his early days, through to his success in the movie industry, as well as his private life. The launch of the book coincided with his 50th birthday.

7. Bernard Nyarko

Bernard Nyarko, popularly known in show business as Bishop Bernard Nyarko, was a Ghanaian actor and comedian who recently became a full-time preacher. He was known for the Hero: Service to Humanity (2017) and Sidechic Gang (2018) movies. Bernard Nyarko died in May 2020.

8. James Gardiner

James Gardiner was born in Accra, Ghana, on May 16, 1985. After Gardiner did his national service at Joy FM, he became a radio host.

James got his start in movies when he met one of the TV stars at an audition for a radio show. That person put him in touch with movie producer Samuel Ruffy Quansah, who gave him his first job. James’s first role in a movie was a small one in a movie called “Desperate to Survive.”

As a beginner in the movie industry, James had some problems, but he was able to solve them quickly. He says that he is a quick learner. James said that one of the hardest things he ever had to do on set was kissing Tonto Dikeh in a movie called “Love and Lust.”

 

9. Abraham Attah

Abraham Nii Attah (born 2 July 2002) is a Ghanaian actor, living in the United States. He hails from the Ga–Dangme ethnic group in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana. He made his feature film debut in Beasts of No Nation (2015). For his leading role of child soldier Agu, he was awarded the Marcello Mastroianni Award for Best Young Actor at the 72nd Venice International Film Festival. In 2017, he appeared in the Marvel Studios film Spider-Man: Homecoming.

10. Kofi Adjorlolo

Kofi Adjorlolo (born March 23, 1956, in Keta) is a Ghanaian actor and producer. Adjorlolo began his career as a Musician, playing instruments including trumpet and organ. In his twenties, he travelled to Nigeria and played with Nigerian musician Victor Uwaifo of Joromi fame. He has also performed with the legendary Felix Bell.

On returning to Ghana, he formed the Osagyefo band and played with the Dasebre band. He worked as a civil servant and a radio presenter at the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation and Peace FM. He was instrumental in establishing the religious radio station Channel R and was honoured by radio station HOT 93.9FM in Accra for 30 years of service to the showbiz industry. He joined the Ghana movie industry in 2003.

11. Akwasi Boadi

Akwasi Boadi (born 18 November 1962), known as Akrobeto, is a Ghanaian actor, comedian and TV presenter. He has been featured in over 100 Kumawood movies and is known by the size of his nostrils. Akwesi Boadi is known in the showbiz industry as Akrobeto (who ‘nose’ tomorrow). Due to his comic acts, he has recently been recognized by the International community where his comic acts were used by several presenters on CNN as well as other international television presenters.

12. Harold Amenyah

Harold Amenyah (born 22 September 1989) is a Ghanaian actor, TV personality, fashion icon, host and businessman who has worked as a brand influencer for popular brands including telecommunication giant Tigo.

He made his acting debut starring in a 2012 TV series ” Xoxo”. Amenyah moved on to feature in several Ghanaian movies and series both Akan and English such as Xoxo, 4play Reloaded, Honour My Tears, A Sting in a Tale, Wedding Night, Every Woman Has A Story, Sadia and Eden. Amenyah became a household name after his commercial for Telecommunication company, Tigo debuted ” Drop that Yam”. In 2019, through the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture and a Barbados movie production company, Amenyah and other Ghanaian actors were selected to star in a Year of Return 2019 movie titled “Joseph”. He played the character Nii.

13. Kwadwo Nkansah

Kwadwo Nkansah (born 15 April 1987), professionally known as Lil Win, is a Ghanaian artist, musician, actor, and comedian. He is the founder and director of Great Minds International School in Kumasi, in the Ashanti Region of Ghana.

14. Ekow Smith Asante

Ekow Smith Asante is among the most familiar faces and names in the Ghanaian entertainment industry. He was born on 15 April 1973 in Takoradi, Western Region of Ghana. He is a renowned Ghanaian actor, television personality, production designer, director, producer, entrepreneur, consultant and philanthropist.

15. Joseph Otsiman

Joseph Otsiman is a New York-based Ghanaian actor, noted for his role as Pastor John Moses in The Cursed Ones and Kojo in The Burial of Kojo. He is a two-time Africa Movie Academy Awards nominee.

Otsiman played the title character, Kojo Bonsu in The Burial of Kojo, directed by Blitz the Ambassador. He was nominated for Best Actor in a Supporting Role at the 2016 AMA Awards and Best Actor in a Leading Role at the 2019 Africa Movie Academy Awards.

16. Kojo Dadson

Emmanuel Kojo Dadson (1953 – 9 February 2021) was a veteran Ghanaian actor, director, producer and musician. He is well known for featuring in and directing movies and series like Home Sweet Home, Sun City and Run Baby Run. He gained prominence for his humour and comedic style of acting. He suffered a stroke whilst acting in 2012. He died on the 9 February 2021, aged 68.

17. Eddie Nartey

Eddie Nartey (born 6 November 1984) is a Ghanaian actor, director, and film producer. His supporting role in Frank Rajah’s Somewhere In Africa earned him a nomination at the Nollywood and African Film Critics Awards, and Ghana Movie Awards.

Ebenezer Akwasi Antwi, known popularly as Ras Nene and Dr. Likee. He was born in Tafo a suburb of Kumasi in the Greater Ashanti Region. He grew up in Tafo where he had his basic education but could not continue. Dr Likee has disclosed he learnt all his vilest acts in Tafo. He had dreadlocks to compliment his actions in movies and real-life stories.

Before he came into the limelight as a comedian, he was called Ras Nene in acting in Kumawood movies and playing notorious roles. Dr. Likee has been featured in many Kumawood movies including In The Land Of Terror. However, he has many comedy kits which have set the trend for him and currently a hot comedian in Ghana.

19. Kwame Owusu Ansah

Kwame Owusu-Ansah or Kwame Owusu Ansah (or John William Kwame Owusu Ansah, 9 December 1967 – 2 May 2008) was a Ghanaian radio broadcaster, actor, poet, Public Relations Consultant and teacher turned actor who graced the scene of the Ghanaian movie industry through various collaboration with Nigerians and major features in Ghanaian movie.

Owusu-Ansah appeared in about 60 movies prior to his death in 2008. He was also the Media Director of Madhaus Incorporation, a record label and subsidiary of FNT Group of Companies (FNT Group).

20. David Dontoh

David Kwame Dontoh (born 1964) affectionately called Uncle David“Ghanaman” and “Kofi Abranteɛ” (Kofi Gentleman), is a veteran Ghanaian actor and television personality who has starred in numerous local and international films, drama, theatre, and other stage productions. He has been very influential in the development of television and drama, especially during the golden age of theatre in Ghana in the 80s and 90s. He took up acting in 1980 after seeing a National Film and Television Institute (NAFTI) newspaper advert inviting potential actors to come forward for training in stage and film acting. The title of his first NAFTI film was “The Way To Shame” a short seven-minute stage production which was directed by Alex Bannerman as part of his formal assessment in drama production.
