Gerardo Malla

He stood out above all in the theater, as an actor and director, but in cinema he played numerous secondary roles. Gerardo Malla, father of actor and musician Coque Malla, and musician Miguel Malla, passed away at the age of 84 on January 15, 2021. “We received the sad news of the death of actor and director Gerardo Malla. We were fortunate to enjoy his master’s degree in productions such as La Chulapona and Los Gavilanes. Have a good trip, maestro. RIP,” said a brief statement from the Teatro de la Zarzuela, which spread the news. “Giant of interpretation”, says the audiovisual rights management company AISGE (Performing Artists, Management Society).

Born in Buendía (Cuenca) on November 24, 1936, Gerardo Malla studied acting at the Institute of Cinematographic Research and Experiences in the 1950s. He debuted as an actor at the Spanish University Theater of the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters from the Complutense University of Madrid.

In 1959 he began his journey as a professional actor at the Spanish Theater in Madrid. He combined his theatrical activity with numerous television roles, in spaces such as Estudio 1, Novela, Ficciones (1972-1974) and the Goya series , all of them on Spanish Television.

He triumphed on stage with titles such as “The Old Lady’s Visit”, The Good Person of Sezuan”, “Behind Closed Doors”, “Tartuffe”, “Getting Down to the Moor”, “Marat Sade” and “Between Marta and Lope”. In addition, Gerardo Malla founded, together with José Luis Alonso de Santos, Rafael Álvarez “El Brujo” and Jesús F. Cimarro, the theater production company Pentación, SL

In cinema, he participated in titles such as María Rosa ,  The Amazing World of Borjamari and Pocholo ,  Oculto  and  Dispongo de barcos . In her last years of activity, she focused on successful series, such as The Ministry of Time and The Cathedral of the Sea . He also wrote the novel “The demolition”. He was married to actress Amparo Valle (died 2016). 

In 1990, Gerardo Malla was awarded the theater prize that is awarded annually by the Hotel Meliá Parque de Valladolid. In 1994 he also received the Ercilla Theater Award promoted and sponsored by the hotel chain of the same name “for the best work for his three consecutive premieres in Bilbao, two of them exclusive, at the Baracaldo Theater”.
