BIOGRAPHY OF GENE WATSON

Gene Watson, born Gary Gene Watson is an American country singer. He was born on October 11, 1943 in Palestine, Texas.

As a young adult, he settled in Houston, Texas and then began performing in major Houston nightclubs while operating as a paint and body man all day. He gained a strong local following with his stage number and it was in Houston that he released his first single on Sun Valley Records.

The single “If It Was That Easy” never charted but as Gene says “it was just exciting to see my name on a record and believe I was really in the business”.

The Grand Ole Opry duo, The Wilburn Brothers, took Gene on the road briefly in 1964. It was The Wilburn Brothers who took Gene to Nashville for the very first time and let him sing on the Grand Ole Opry stage. Gene notes, “I sang the Hank Williams song ‘I can’t help it if I’m still in love with you’ and got a standing ovation so I don’t understand what to follow I just walked out and I did a gospel standard ‘It’s No Secret What God Can Do’.

Later they took him to the Ernest Tubb record store and he got on stage and broadcast on The Midnight Jamboree. Then it was back to Texas honky-tonks and a string of local singles in the 60s.

In 1974, one of Watson’s small-label singles caught the ear of Capitol Records. Gene was an auto body repairman and the star singer of Houston’s Dynasty nightclub when Capitol Records picked up the steamy sex waltz “Love in the Hot Afternoon” for national distribution. It became the first of Watson’s two dozen top 10 hits in early 1975.

Gene decided to quit drinking in 1980 and quit smoking soon after. He underwent surgery and survived colon cancer in 2000-01. Through it all, he proceeded to record one critically acclaimed collection after another. Watson was inducted into the Texas Music Hall of Fame in 2002 and later into the inaugural class of the Houston, Texas Music Hall of Fame in 2013.

GENE WATSON WHERE LOVE BEGINS LYRICS

Come in pretty lady you just made my night
I wasn’t too sure you’d call
Sit down and I’ll fix you a drink if you want
It’s late but the morning is still young I’m glad you could get there, I was hoping you’d make it
I’ve been thinking about it all week
What is it, what’s the matter, what’s making you cry
You say it’s the first time you leave if you’d rather not lose what you came
for Walk out the same door I let you in
Leave if you’d rather not lose what you came with
Stay and you’ll see that’s where love begins It’s not like we were strangers I kissed your warm lips
But someone was always there
But now we’re alone so there’s no no buts or ifs
Come here, let me do your hair, leave if you’d rather not lose what you came
for Leave the same door I let you in
Leave if you’d rather not lose what you came with
Rest and you’ll see that’s where love begins

GENE WATSON CARMEN LYRICS

Oh Carmen, I’ve had too much tequila
Between you and that Mexican moon, I’m gonna fall
El Paso lady, you drive me crazy
In a language I don’t understand, you said it all. Dusty old Juarez on old Rio Grande
It sure comes in handy when you need a friend
I don’t belong here your dark eyes keep warning
I’m leaving in the morning but for now leave me to enter. Oh Carmen, I’ve had too much tequila
Between you and that Mexican moon, I’m gonna fall
El Paso lady, you drive me crazy
In a language I don’t understand, you said it all. Cross the border, cross the line
Drunk on yesterday’s wine and still feel the flame
The guitars keep playing a song I’ve never heard
Without saying a word, you keep screaming my name. Oh Carmen, I’ve had too much tequila
Between you and that Mexican moon, I’m gonna fall
El Paso lady, you drive me crazy
In a language I don’t understand, you said it all. In a language I don’t understand, you said it all
