Gary Winick
Cancer is a disease that hits, and hits hard. At just 49 years old, Gary Winick has died of a brain tumor. Curiously, it was the same day as the Oscars, which featured an actress, Anne Hathaway, whom he directed in his penultimate film, Girlfriend Wars .
He was born in Canada in 1961, and at the time of writing these hasty lines it is difficult to find biographical data on the filmmaker. Although the commercial aspect of his films might make one think of someone very dependent on the studios, the reality is that in 1999 he founded InDigEnt, a company with which he supported 19 independent films over 10 years. One of them, Tadpole , from 2002 and directed by Winick himself, stood out at Sundance and was bought to be distributed by Miramax.
Among the filmmaker’s most commercial films are El sueño de mi vida , with Jennifer Garner , about a teenager who one day wakes up with the body of a woman; the children’s La cobweb of Carlota , good family cinema withDakota Fanning and talking animals; and the romantic comedies Girlfriend Wars and Letters to Juliet .
